“I grew up in washington heights and I would love to know what year this place opened? I would pass it a lot and never think to go inside. It's a good quality book store. There's a small section of manga. I love that my community has access to books!”

“A wonderful and wide selection of Torah literature for serious scholars and for the layman or woman alike. A very respectable collection of books written in English as well as a very nice children's section.Although there are a number of paintings and a large selection of other Judaica items like yarmalkas and tzitzis and some music the main focus is books and Torah literature. They usually receive the latest recently published scholarly volumes and biographies and display them on a separate table. In addition they organize sections to cater to those who are interested in books on upcoming Jewish holidays, life cycle events and the weekly Torah portion. The salespeople are knowledgeable and accomodating.”

“Great local bookstore, walked by it one day and saw a sign "$1 books" with several full carts of books, many in very good/near-perfect condition. The employees are very friendly, had good recommendations and to say they are extremely passionate about literature doesn't fully do it justice.”

“A cozy, neighborhood gem of a bookstore and decided I found a new favorite. Though the selection of fiction are not that extensive, I love how they have book recommendations, bargain options, and blind date with a book available. The basement was dedicated mostly for young adult and children books. They also have a stationary, gift items and random trinkets which I also love!”

“I have not yet had the privilege to walk into Mizrahi's physical location. However, approximately 5 years ago, I messaged him asking if he had an off the beaten track item in stock, and if he could let me know when he receives it.I just received an email from him, many years later that he had finally got his hands on it.Israel not only knows the details about his 100s of thousands of SKUs, he even knows who messaged him about it, and he does an excellent job of playing matchmaker between the man and the book.”

“Astoria Bookshop is tucked away off the main drag and that only makes it more perfect. The shop is loaded with current best sellers, kids books & cute notebooks, bookmarks and cards. They even had some signed copies of books that were great to see. The ladies were so friendly and sweet. I had my dog with me and they were so excited to see her and offered her treats and pets. Checked out the shops Instagram where they have all their events & happenings. I also picked up my next read and I'll definitely go back there for more books and tosupport this great shop!”

“Vasilyev and Simon are both experts on Russian film and can recommend you a great choice in your favorite genre. If you are learning Russian, you need to hear various accents, and watching films with English subtitles is the best way to reinforce what you have learned. Sadly, I have not progressed far, but I am having fun along the way! Also, obviously, if you already know Russian, than why not patronize local businesses! This is a friendly place, often missed by tourists visiting Brighton Beach. There are many books and records here as well. Not too expensive.”

“This place is really one in a million! I heard about the zines before I came, and was pleasantly surprised at the sheer number and diversity of them! I loved looking through them, they're all super creative. Theres a cute bookstore cat, and who doesn't love that. They also have an eclectic selection of books, and there's something for everyone. There's used books that are pretty cheap, and then some new books that are priced at new book prices. Also tons of art and records to look through. I also had a great interaction with the owner who was super friendly!”

“If you can’t find a book in here that you want then I suggest you call Amazon but more than likely you’ll get it here. This is a beautiful place there’s two of them, two of the book stores. They both are in close proximity to Columbia university. And that says a lot about what they carry.”

“My first experience shopping at McNally Jackson was in Soho, at their Prince Street store. That location, which has a cafe, is relatively large for a bookstore in that neighborhood, so it wouldn't be fair to compare it to this one. The McNally Jackson in Williamsburg is special in its own right, however. It manages to carry the look and feel of a local, independent bookstore, while also maintaining a fresh, modern vibe with its bright lighting and welcoming layout. A table featuring new, popular titles is the first thing someone sees as they enter the store, making it incredibly easy for them to discover their next book (or another to add to their reading list). Considering space constraints, there is a decent, well-organized selection in stock. This bookstore, like any McNally Jackson in Brooklyn or Manhattan, is worth checking out.”

The books were my favorite part along with the amazing people I had the opportunity to meet. I had no idea I was stepping into such an oasis when I stepped into this bookstore . It’s a Gem in NY!”

“I urge people to patronize Kitchen Arts & Letters. They have been written up many times. They are famous. But I am adding to the acclaim for a specific reason. If we like to drop into a bookstore to browse, or have a question we would like answered by someone with expertise, then we must patronize these establishments and ensure the proprietor can remain in business. I fear that with the advent of the internet, which is now no longer new or novel but simply part of our lives (as in this social media platform), and the consolidation of retail shops into international chains, an independent such as this -- with a specialty -- will be threatened. I am as guilty as anyone else. Most of what I buy, and not only to read, is delivered to my home. But there is a delight to visiting a place such as Kitchen Arts & Letters that the delivery of a box cannot generate. For one thing, you are seeing human beings and interacting with them. For another thing, you can look around -- an algorithm can recommend similar items, but that is not the same as spotting a title on a shelf and realizing it would make a perfect gift. That is why I visited. A work colleague is departing. I'd like to believe we will remain friends. She is expecting a pile of gifts, and she has said so, which is endearing and funny. I have a few already procured. I was searching for something specific, and I might still go online, but I found three different possibilities, all of which I purchased, and based on recommendations by the helpful guy who came right up. This individual loves to cook. She also is a fan of horror movies. So I was trying to find something unique that might blend those together. I ended up with not campy items, but a volume entitled Blood, another Bone, and an Anthony Bourdain graphic novel with similar themes. I expect to go back. Although I have a library, scattered in various venues, I am not an enthusiast for this genre. Looking around, however, I am very much tempted. There is so much here. Cookbooks sell well. They are a type of publication that people value. They are handed down over generations. That is good for the world and for families. We all could learn if we slowed down and prepared a meal at home.”

“So adorable! I'm so surprised I have driven by this store without knowing so many times. This store is the cutest bookworm oasis with a sprinkle of unique knickknacks for gifting joy or just for yourself. You walk in and to the right is a little book nook with arm chairs and a "fireplace". Straight to the back right is a children's corner draped with a bevy of new and old finds and some comfy pillow cushions for the littles to sit and read. We found some great books I haven't seen before and probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise, they do a nice job placing books face forward and highlighting a diverse collection. From a book about dim sum to critter club it was a nice collection without feeling cluttered. There's another corner near the register with totes, accessories and so forth. After purchasing our books (each with a bookmark and in beautifully designed paper bags) the woman let my girls Pick out a sticker to which the obliges with enthusiasm. Right across from Verona park and a much welcomed Addition to Bloomfield Ave. Thanks for making it a lovely visit. Be back soon!”
