I was amazed at how efficient operations were as I ordered a replacement birth certificate. 2:00 in the afternoon appears to be a good time to visit. Reading the website ahead of time ensured that I had what I needed, so filling out the form and being processed was only a 15-minute trip. Do yourself a favor and take an hour off so that you are there during non-peak times: it'll pay off.

If you come here to get copies of a birth certificate it may take up to 2-3 hours. The place becomes crowded quickly and seating arrangements could be better. they need more staff in my opinion. Be prepared to take a ticket with numbers and letter on it and fill out a short form on a clipboard for what services you need. Then watch the screen doesn't call the tickets in order. Also note there are no snack machines or drink machines in this place.

Very busy office!! If you want to spend your day waiting in line then you should go between 11-3. Best to get there early or either around 4:15. Very polite staff and very helpful.

This is like dealing with a ponzie scheme..every single little thing is 12 bucks..and you end up going over and over and over..you get my point..to get one thing accomplished..guess SC really is still living that old south mentality!

EDIT: I finally got copies of my updated birth certificate. It seems to have taken a phone call from the lawyer who represented me for my gender change and then another filing fee, because apparently they didn't have mine on file, and they were STILL slow in sending it after that. I don't know if my bad experiences with the Vital Records Office have been because I'm transgender, or just because they're incompetent (maybe a bit of both!) I have a court order from last year, allowing me to legally change my name on my birth certificate, as well as have it indicate on the certificate that I was born one gender and have legally changed it. Well, after sending the information they seemingly needed to them once, to request a new birth certificate with these changes, they rejected it the first time asking for more info. Each time they would ask for some new document they hadn't before as well as a filing fee. Now it's been three times rejected, and I finally sent back everything they wanted. Note that one of the things they kept asking for in each rejection, I had sent a copy of, every time after that. But they kept asking as though it wasn't there. So...no more rejection letters this time around. So I called them after a while to check on the status of things. Lady on the phone told me it was the desk of Russell Sanders, who was working on it, it had been approved, so I just needed to wait for it to get done and they'd send it to me. Then she proceeded to ask me really personal questions about my gender transition. Not for any reason for the legal changes, just out of curiosity. I just hoped to myself it was taking a long time but that it would get to me, after that, because I haven't exactly been thrilled about calling them again. But I'll have to do that and give them hell because it's March, and the documents that they finally accepted were sent to them in late October of last year!

The line begins to form about one hour before the office opens. Arrive early for best results. We were visiting to obtain records to support a passport application. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Thanks to the help and suggestions we were able obtain the passport in time to travel.

Really the worst customer service. I tried asking one question and I was continually interrupted. I hope they get all new staff. My complaints will be taken higher up, for whatever good that does
