Wonderful campground with some of the original buildings and wonderful placards that describe their significance in the first intentional African American community in the Central Valley. If you need a place to stay anywhere near Bakersfield go here.

Such a great part of history. I wish I planned better so I could actually go inside some of the homes. I usually just stop as we're passing through from SoCal to home in NorCal.

We arrived late and left early. We had to pay with the drop box. We were disappointed that the showers weren't open. No notice either. There was a rattlesnake snake waiting to get in also
Toilets: Rest rooms were clean and well kept ,but the showers were locked

It was very interesting to see and learn the history of this city and park. Had a great time. The tour guide personnel did a great job showing us around and telling us the history of the place. I would highly recommend this place to visit

A great place for stargazing. We camp here often. Clean washrooms with flushing toilets. Great location for riding your bike or strolling around the park.

Today I went on a field trip with my school to Allensworth State Park in California, for the annual rededication event. This is the first & only Black founded town in the state. It felt really good to see what my ancestors built & how they paved the way! I never heard of this place until recently & it was a great experience, if only I could go back in time ~

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park is a small historic park nestled among residential areas, and it's not very convenient to reach. Inside the park, you’ll find static displays of various pioneer-era buildings. We visited while driving from Fresno back to LA. The interiors of these buildings are not open, so you can only view them through the windows. Unless you’re planning to camp, there’s not much of particular interest to see here. The park could benefit from improvements, especially to its public restrooms, which are incredibly hard to find. It would be great if the park offered interactive elements, such as reenactments, historical dramas, or even experiences where visitors could try on period clothing or use vintage laundry tools.

Just 10 minutes off the freeway and a gem with rich history. Jerelyn from the park gave us an awesome and memorable tour of the Smith House, leaving me feeling emotional and connected to history with the stories she told. She even played an old record for us on a victrola that gave me chills. Thank you!

This place is a must-visit! My mom brought my brother and me here as kids to connect with our ancestors’ history. It’s the first and only town in California founded, funded, and governed by Black people. While I was a bit let down that the Juneteenth Jubilee didn’t match the scale of previous ones I remembered, I’m eager to help promote it. My hope is that next year’s event will be even grander and attract more attendees to celebrate and preserve our rich history.

Very dangerous for dogs. They mow the grass AND the foxtails so there are dry foxtails lying everywhere. Impossible to avoid them
It caused our dog emergency surgery. We won't go back.
