It had been a slow death, over several years, with frequent travel interruptions and long rides on the flatbeds of tow trucks. Finally, in the summer of 2021 in Whitefish, Montana, my 1985 Westfalia died. Its four cylinders were worn and leaky, and the carburetor was often so confused it would open wide the fuel lines and flood the engine--even while cruising at interstate speeds. Luckily, my camper lives near Petaluma, where Kurt and Marty of The Garage perform mechanical miracles, including Westfalia heart transplants. Following a long wait for parts, they cut out the fatally weak VW engine and installed a much younger, stronger Subaru engine of a certain vintage. As a result, my revitalized camper now takes us up and down the California coast, easily climbing hills and occasionally even passing other vehicles. Kurt and Marty made it possible with their deep knowledge of all things VW, and especially of busses and campers. I cannot recommend them highly enough for their expertise and dedication to ensure their customer is, well, a happy camper.

These guys are great people. I ran out of gas about a block away and they were the first place I came across on my walk to a gas station. Not only did they help me out with a gallon of gas, they did it without charging me, simply out of kindness. Working on cars is tough work and lots of people take shortcuts to get the job done cheaply. If there was anyone I was going to trust to take good care of my car and not cut corners, it would be someone with the upstanding attitude of these guys. Great place.

My Mini Cooper had a check engine light that needed to be reset after I had replaced the high pressure fuel pump myself. I drove it in there, he hooked it up, downloaded the codes, reset the check engine light and sent me on my way. Very nice and knowledgable about Volkswagens if you have any classics as well.

This valued shop, owned by two mechanics who actually DO the work and care about the quality and their customers is by far the BEST place to take my VW Vanagon Camper. They have years and years of experience, know how, and specialty tools if need be, to do anything these vans and campers require. I have given my money to every shop in the Bay Area that specializes in VW, and the Garage is undoubtedly my very first and the best choice.
