Reviews are so hard to go by. I made a reservation and went to yelp and I was suddenly so nervous when I wasn't beforehand. I went to the town and country the Avis is in a small room conveniently at the front. The guy who checked me in was nice. (I usually get names but was so busy today I just didn't) We had a nice conversation so idk why people act like he's so rude. He does his and is efficient and seems like a nice guy. I was in and out in 10 mins. He walked me all the way to the car. And the car is nice too. This is the trouble with going to the internet and basing everything on reviews. There's always back story and always 2 sides. I'm glad I didn't end up changing anything and didn't go by what the reviews said. It would have costed me a lot more money and time for absolutely no reason.

Avis is pretty over priced and this location where I rent from has very poor service . The only reason I stick with Avis is for the points. Once my points run out I am done with Avis unless they try and make this right. Lets see if someone even reads this survey.

One of the life time worst experience ever. If you want to experience the worst car rental service, come here. You thought you booked through Avis or Budget and then you are safe. No!!! The corporate contracted the rental service out to a private company! No matter where you book, you finally need to communicate the rude old man who will tell you that there is NO car available even though you show him the reservation confirmation. This is totally like the airline overbooking situation. However, there is no penalty for him for not giving you a car, and you even don’t know if he is lying to you or not.

I visited the Avis in Town & Country SD several times in 2018 and 2019 to pick up a rental car from Avis which is located in the lobby. It was the easiest rental location that I know of near North Park/Downtown. I only subject myself to the airport rental agencies if I have absolutely no other choice. I was quite happy with the service that I received from the manager and his son who run this location until February 2019. (I will preface this review with I was at that time car-less after totalling a car prior and living in three cities/states in 2018 where I did not need a car. However, in San Diego a car is a necessity since our public transportation is still pretty subpar for a metropolitan of our size.)

Reserved a car through Christmas and got a call in the morning of my reservation that there were no cars left, my reservation had been canceled and I needed to call customer service. When I did that the they wouldn't honor my reservation price, only a few cars were left, and I could only book a car at 3x the original quoted price. They said "this sometimes happens" and left it at that. They've lost a customer.

In 2018 I totalled my car, me being me, I wasn't ready to replace my little red hot rod with some new model thing so renting it was. I returned to San Diego fall of 2018 and new of this location and it had the best rates near me. I rented consistently with Avis and it was always easy. The intermediate car was always reasonably priced, clean, and I was able to extend the rentals with no problem. The desk managers, older gentleman and his son, were friendly and helpful and gave me upgrades whenever available. I was extremely happy with the service and what I was paying for until February 2019. I started a new reservation on a Friday evening and made it for pickup the next day, Saturday. Got up and got to the Town & Country Hotel and to the Avis door in the lobby when I did there were several other people standing at the door and some angry voices. I had no idea what the commotion was about until I saw a handwritten sign on the door that said: CLOSED - NO MORE CARS. Like the other customers standing reading the sign I was extremely pissed off. How the heck do you have a reservation and show up to pickup a car and there are no cars? I called the Avis toll free number and they were no help and had no information. It was completely frustrating and annoying. Clearly all of us there to pickup a car needed one for whatever reason. That same day done with dealing with rentals (Avis was until then a good one. Hertz and Enterprise were terrible and my least fave in San Diego and any other city.) , I went to a dealer in Mission Valley and purchased a car.

Christmas Eve 2019 ... I have had a car reservation and have had for a long time. I get a call 1.5 hours before they close. No Cars. Really Sorry. The guy was apologetic, but now I'm stuck. Completely ruining Christmas! How the F am I supposed to get to Phoenix now?

Was given a dented car that made noises at higher speeds. Had to call their customer service line several times to make sure I was not going to be charged. The money I saved was not worth the trouble. They also do not pick up the phone.

If I could do 0 stars .. Raul the only person that works there .. is so rude and not helpful at all .. I rented a car and it smelled like marijuana but didn't think anything of it ... I went to el centro California and when I was coming back I had to stop at a check point and the dogs immediately ran to the car .. after I was sent to inspection the dogs found drugs in the car .. we almost got arrested I had to explain it was a rental .. and we were let go.. when I got to the rental place to return the car I explained the horrible experience I had and Raul didn't care all he said is call corporate .. I said why call corporate when you gave me the rental .. I asked if they clean the cars before they give the car to the customer.. and he said all we do is wash it from outside .. his attitude was rude and careless.. I will file a complaint with corporate., horrible experience

Reserved vehicle online and prepaid for reservation, arrived and the old man who I couldn’t tell worked there said he didn’t have any vehicles. Walked from hotel expecting a rental car and now I have to walk back. Not a good way of doing business.

This is the worst car rental place ever, not even worth one star, been there several times, some were just okay but last two times was told they didnt have cars and did not offer any assistance on getting us a replacement, the same nasty older man with the personality of a rock. He seems to be the main person most complaints are about. I made the mistake of giving them the benefit of a doubt, but never again and warn people that not only will they have to wait a lifetime to get a car if you're lucky to get one, or no assistance if you happen to recieve the response, "We have no cars....."be prepared to find other transportation, and no apologies or anything from the worthless man behind the counter.

Place is only ran by one person. Takes some time to pick up a car. The customer service was good even with the printer breaking and the employee having to work on it while people waited.

Poorest customer service . The older man has to be the rudest man in the country. My son and I came to pick up our minivan which was reserved two months earlier. We encountered a very hostile older man. We asked if minivan was ready. He threw three keys on the counter and said go check it out. That's all we got . I asked him how can it be if l reserved it. That's when he went off, he started shouting at me. I couldn't believe it! I thought I must be on a show cause there was no way Avis would allow their employees to treat customers this way. I will never ever rent a car from there again. I am surprised such a mean man works in a hotel rental car place. As a San Diego resident I am embarrassed that he is a representative of San Diego. I feel sorry for all the tourists that had to interact with him. He needs to retire he is such a cranky old man.

Reserved a car for 3 days. Returned it within the required timeframe and have the parking lot time stamp to show. The rental agreement was for $156 and I have been charged $218 with a separate transaction for an additional $64. I tried to call the location twice, with no answer. I now have Avis Customer Service reviewing the issue and they said I kept the car an extra day, which is why I was charged extra. I clearly didn’t and have provided them with the parking lot timestamp so they can review. I still don’t know what the $64 charge is for. Not very happy with this location.

I rented from this budget/Avis car rental, the gas tank was less then half-full when i pick up and i returned the car with little more gas then what was in it when i pick it i called the employee after i left there to let him know the paper was wrong on how it disclosed the gas he said ok he will fix it on his p.c., The Genius/con artist of a guy that works there tried to charge my credit card for $60.00 more. i tried to call the guy and after i explained it to him again and sent him the pictures he stopped talking to me. lucky i took pictures before and after, but since i told my credit card company to deny the extra Fraud charged i now i am dealing with budget collections and they dont care that i have proof they still want to send me to collection, please watch out when renting from here i dont want to see anyone else get scammed like me and others that posted on here. it looks like this guy and this company keep on doing it to us consumers please be careful!!!

Picked up the car, which I booked on Costco Travel. price was supposed to be $102.08 for the 3 day rental. I dropped it off before the time due on the 3rd day but since there isn't always someone in the rental office I had to leave the keys in the box. Later I noticed a charge on my credit card for 123.63. When I called This Avis location and spoke to the guy in charge he wasn't sure and then when he finally gave an answer he said they charged me $20 because I brought the car back dirty. He had no idea what was dirty or where just they charged me $20. Now when I picked it up it hadn't been vacuumed or even freshly washed! And since they told me I brought it back dirty but couldn't tell me where or what was dirty I now realize that this is there way of making more money because when you book thru Costco you get a cheaper rate. I had a long conversation with Costco Travel and apparently I am not the only one who has had problems. I am not sure if this is an Avis Problem, although I did file a complaint with them as well but I would recommend staying away from this independent Rental place. Find another rental location!

Total and complete RIPOFF. WARNING! Do NOT come to SD airport and go with AVIS. They hand you sheets with everything printed that you cannot read - the totals even are ilegible. Then they say "initial here".....they told you that the price was what you had a price for in the reservation (I got mine through COSTCO - and am contacting them too) - and they have added in things you specifically SAID you didn't want. Since you can't read the sheet they give you, you don't even know the charges are hundreds of dollars more - for a FOUR DAY RENTAL - than what you were told. TOTAL RIP OFF. Then they even charge GAS when you show up with a topped-off tank you filled 1 mile away. STAY AWAY. AVIS IS A SCAM.

Worse experience ever. Do not rent here!!! I returned the car 2 hours late and the manager charged me an extra full day rental. I rent from here yearly to drive home for the holidays, and now I will never rent here again.

Rented a small SUV for a trip up to LA and I didn't want to drive my car. The first car they gave me had a defective CD player. Since I was going to be on the road for a few hours at a stretch, I wanted to be able to listen to my music. I brought it back and they exchanged the car with no problem. It was not expensive, clean and comfortable to drive in for hours.

This Avis car rental experience was for the most part, awesome! The building itself, while clearly labeled with the Avis sign, is confusing as the sign is on the back of a brick building and my suggestion would be another sign or arrow showing how to get to the front entrance. As for rental experience, I was extremely pleased when I was offered a TOYOTA PRIUS, although I had reserved a compact car. My previous rental experiences have always found the hybrid vehicles to be much more expensive than regular rentals, but it was all same price. One thing I found peculiar though, because I have an out of state drivers license I had to sign a paper stating I had not flown into San Diego within the last 12 hours, otherwise would be charged an airport fee around $20.00 a day! The rental location is a 15 minute plus drive away from any airport!! The drop off was smooth a hassle free, received an email and my confirmation/receipt within an hour :)

I rented an economy car from the Avis location on Hotel Circle San Diego. They gave me a Kia Soul. It had great fuel economy and was fun and easy to drive.
Pick up and drop off was super easy. For pick up I worked with the attendant. For drop off it was after hours so it was easy to drop keys in the drop box.
I found the whole experience to be extremely positive and the price was the best(I shopped around)
