CarMax is America's largest used-car dealership with approximately 156 locations nationwide. A Fortune 500 Company, each CarMax facility employs an average of 40 sales associates and was listed as 85th on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For." In 2015 the company was able to sell 582, 282 used cars. The idea for CarMax came from Circuit City executives and was developed for nearly a year in secret throughout 1991 under the name "Project X." Used cars had always been the main model for their business, but once they became established, CarMax did purchase the rights to locations from manufacturers such as Toyota, Mitsubishi and Chrysler as well. CarMax officially separated themselves from Circuit City in 2002 in order to become its own independent company that it is in the present day.
