Nice museum. $2 suggested donation. Good pottery displays, paintings by local artists, and interesting rail road related items. Curator was very welcoming. Also had a small, but nice, area with activities for kids.

While exploring central Indiana, I often try to time my visits so that I can check out the county museums when I can. I will say that the Putnam County/Greencastle museum is one of the best organized museums I've found. After parking in their massive parking lot, I entered into the gift shop area and signed in. I arrived just as they opened, so they turned the lights on the several rooms of the museum and I went on a self-guided tour. What surprised me is that in addition to the local history that was captured in the museum, there were also collections that locals had gathered that were donated even though they weren't necessarily specific to the county. There is also a lot of art in the museum. Paintings of early life in the county start you on your tour and then there are numerous pottery works on display in the next section. The museum also has photos of one of the round barns in the area and "recreated" the look of a round barn inside the museum. The interior of the barn has been set up to look like a single room school house. The museum also has a lot of antique furniture and equipment that have been well preserved. The back part of the museum is for special exhibits. While there, I noticed a boy scout exhibit that was being set up as well as a tribute to one of the long time businesses that had just gone out of business after 75 years. The exhibit for the former dry cleaners showed some of the equipment used in the business. Suggested donations run $2 for non-members. Note that there was a docent who arrived after I did, but he seemed more interested in reading his novel than asking me if I had any questions. Didn't leave a great parting impression for me. The kindness of Lisa and Megan. The concern they have about preserving Putnam county History along with many of their historians.
