We tried to go into Deco Doug's today. We had to park around the corner from the shop and walk. When we arrived at the front door, the door was locked with a note on the door that read call ______ (phone number) to shop. It was cold and snowy outside. I am not going to call a shop and then wait for someone to show up.I'll take my business elsewhere.Don't have a store if you aren't going to be open.Poor customer service.

Interesting little shop- emphasis on the "little" part- filled with whimsical antiques that are the real deal. Every time I go to Royal Oak, I want to check out Deco Doug, but for whatever reasoning, it hasn't worked out until now. Either I've forgotten, gotten too busy and realized how late it was or I was there when they are not open. It's been on my list of things to do in Royal Oak for over a year, so when I finally managed to pop my head in here last weekend, I was super excited. First things first- this is a tiny store and I do mean tiny. It's narrow, yet teeming with treasures in every corner. I mean, literally, every single piece of real estate in the store is occupied by something sublime and, in most instances, totally awesome and of the Art Deco period, which I just so happen to love and collect. Despite the limited square footage, don't let the size fool you. There is treasure to be found here! Plus, if you're into "bakelite" collectibles, you'll be in luck because this shop was stocked with intriguing vintage "bakelite" pieces. Recently, I've become more interested in collecting "bakelite," so I was kinda geeked about seeing what they had in store. Everything from vintage smoking accessories, cocktail sets and barware to mirrors, art, and sculpture and signage to old phones, waffle makers, chandeliers, and electronics from the Deco period were available. The prices were not that high for the Royal Oak market, but seemed on par with the quality of items I saw here. I was impressed. Like I said, the shop is small. Right after we stopped in, a gaggle of other shoppers walked in and it was a bit of chaos. If you're claustrophobic, you might not like it. It was a tight squeeze in there with six people, plus the owner. Oh, and I felt the most intense need to be careful everywhere I walked because I didn't want to break anything or risk damaging any of the items that were in the way. The owner seemed pretty friendly and knowledgeable about his wares, particularly of the Deco era. He knew his stuff, that's obvious. He was pretty interesting to chat with and he told us about an upcoming antiques expo next month, which we might be interested in attending. My hubby used to live in Royal Oak and said that this is one of the few interesting shops still in the area that had been open when we used to live here as well, since so much else has changed over the past decade. I guess the owner has been in business at this same location for ages, so that tells me he knows his antiques. As I said, the place is small, but there is amazing stuff literally hanging from the ceiling. You really have to crane your neck around to see everything. If you don't, it will be easy to not notice some of the best pieces. In the end, we picked up a vintage piece of glassware from the Hotel De Crillion in Paris, which was lovely, for only $10. It wasn't priced, so I asked the owner and he just threw that price out there. Honestly, I would have probably paid more for it because I really wanted it. Clearly, I didn't quibble over the price and we paid for it. I could have easily spent much more, but I wasn't in the mood to bring home anything too large that evening. Maybe next time, though.

I met Doug Ramsey when I stumbled upon his shop Deco Doug located in the artsy section of Royal Oak, Michigan. Although his storefront is small, Doug's shop is full of rare and authentic treasures such as a 1920s chandelier and a 1930s cash register he uses to conduct business. He talks fondly of each item and can tell you exactly how he acquired it. When I jokingly asked if he took things from dead people (I had just seen the film Please Give), he responded, "No. Not usually." I immediately fell in love with his dry wit. I can't imagine Doug not talking to someone who enters his store. If you want to know about an item, all you have to do is ask. He is enthusiastic about everything! I don't know much about antiques, but I fell in love with Deco Doug!
