“What an absolutely amazing store for fans of theatre arts! From the moment you enter, you know you're in a special place. The spiral book art swirling through the entrance and store are a dramatic and simple welcome for what is to come. The front section is books on actors, biographies, acting technique, theatre business, costumes, set building, you name it. If you need to learn something about acting or theatre arts, chances are, there is a book on it in the Drama Book shop. The middle area is where the coffee station is. We didn't have any coffee but it smelled great. The back part of the store was my favorite, with rows and rows of scripts, librettos it's a script lover's dream come true. They are in author last name alphabetical order, though I do wish they were by genre as well. There are lots of little nooks and seating areas to settle into if you want to write, study, read or just relax. The restrooms were also very tidy. Can't wait to return!”

“I grew up in washington heights and I would love to know what year this place opened? I would pass it a lot and never think to go inside. It's a good quality book store. There's a small section of manga. I love that my community has access to books!”

“Needed a bday gift real quick. I was so happy to see a toy & book store right on Lenox & I didn’t have to walk to 25th????. Very cute store with a variety of unique toys & books. I recommend.”

“Impressed with the reno (I haven't been here since H.S. soooo a long time) and the selection of international fiction novels. Some of the staff at checkout can be super unhelpful though.”

“Such an amazing selection of both books and stationery! Their manga/graphic novel section is also crazy impressive. I spent way more money than I should have but I couldn't resist. The stationery level was a dream. I was able to find so many great brands I love. The cashier was very kind and suggested I get a member ship to save on my big order which was great. Just got my $10 gift card in the mail too! Great spot.”

“Ok, I kind of really hate reading, (always have, REALLY wish i didn't, i just simply can't help it) but after coming through here and seeing all the different genres and personality in this place, it lowkey made me want to read a book LOL. I always enjoy looking at the nonfiction and travel sections, and the selection is HUGE. The place is really well organized and clean too, which makes it easier to navigate through the three floors worth of books they have. Also for the niche audience that would care... they do have jellycats. Listening to chemtrails over the country club while walking through this place is the ultimate vibe.. would recommend 10/10.”

“The owner, family, employees and even the other guests were truly delightful. From the moment I stepped into the hotel I was greeted with not only amazing smells of the fresh canolis, cappuccino and homemade pastas but inviting and friendly faces. The design and thoughtfulness put into the hotel is breathtaking - all of the history wrapped into a hotel with a story and breathtaking views in the rooms. If you're lucky, you'll even get to listen to Randy's talented children artfully playing the piano. Thank you Blue Moon hotel for this special treat!Your friend from South Dakota”

“Very welcoming place from the entrance. The address was easy to locate on the building and upon entry the receptionist greeted with a warm smile. Well lit, the spacious community area gave way to private nooks to carry out private conversations and manage private business. The elevators made the building accessible as well as multiple restrooms for all. Excellent place to learn and entertain.”

“Finally had the pleasure of sitting here all afternoon. The store is very well kept and attended to. The book displays and merchandise are very well displayed. The visible rafters, exposed brick, & large windows give it that 1800s vibe. Grady was so pleasant to converse with. However, my only issue is that it’s way too cold in here. The thermostat read 64°. My feet were cold and my toes were numb. The bathroom could use some tidying up. If it’s always this cold in here that’s definitely a deterrent for me especially in the winter months.”

“What a fun place to visit in the East Village! They offer coffee based drinks as well as alcohol. On their website the alcohol drinks have clever names based on books, they weren't posted as such at the bar. Look them up on their website if interested.Sit a bit, have a drink, have a snack, enjoy the vibe and certainly check out the books. Great selection for a smaller shop. They also have socks, bags, etc. I left with 3 books and a smile on my face. Highly recommend!”

“Tannen's shop is magical. Anyone who has made it to the 6th floor at number 45 and to door 608 will end up in a paradise for magicians. Hundreds of tricks are waiting behind the large counter to be demonstrated and purchased. There is also a whole library of magical literature on the shelves.”

“Hands down the best bookstore in NYC. Best selection, very good atmosphere and the prices are twice as low as those on amazon, averaging 6$ for a quality book! 100% recommend this!”

“My favorite art bookstore in NYC. The owner regularly updated the collection and I’d love to come back from time to time to see if they updated some hidden gem to the shelf.”

“I discovered Printed Matter one day while walking around Chelsea visiting various art spaces. In this context, maintaining the operation at this location is absolutely a smart, brilliant idea as it attracts art nerds who also happen to be book connoisseurs. For me, the curation and selection are unique enough to place Printed Matter in its own category. Think of extremely limited press runs combined with high quality presentation and intriguing subject matter. No NYC bookstore tour would be complete without a stop at Printed Matter.”

“The perfect local bookstore. When I envision a perfect Sunday I think of grabbing a coffee and walking around a neighborhood and popping into a good bookstore. This is that vision. The staff are kind and always helpful. Definitely will continue to support this buisness!”

“Very nice place and location. It is a walking distance from subway station. Nice coffe place to get together or to review books. The only bad point is to the lack of free wifi for guests.”

“If you can’t find a book in here that you want then I suggest you call Amazon but more than likely you’ll get it here. This is a beautiful place there’s two of them, two of the book stores. They both are in close proximity to Columbia university. And that says a lot about what they carry.”

“A true gem for any chess enthusiast. Not just as a shop but as a source of knowledge for improving your chess and learning about the history of chess. Fred’s a USCF Master, chess historian, and an incredibly passionate chess educator. Stop by for a great conversation or book recommendation, and walk away with some newfound knowledge that will no doubt elevate your appreciation of chess (and likely your ELO).”

“Both Costco and Nordstrom's legendary customer service pales in comparison to the level of service Josh, Sunday, and the B&B Rare Books team provide. Josh and Sunday make time to educate you on the ins and outs of book collecting, and they work with you on your collection regardless of whether you're new to collecting or you've been collecting for decades.I've purchased books from multiple rare / antiquarian book sellers over the years, and none come close to the white glove service, dedication, and care that Josh and Sunday provide. You'd be remiss in at least not checking out their store or giving them a call.”

“Has been around for a long time. Lots of Books from China, Taiwan & HongKong. Books on all kinds of subjects like health, cooking, classic literature, kid books, etc. Good reference materials. “Adorable cookbook store in Soho! It's easy to miss, so look out for the Cookbook sign tucked away on a quiet street. I highly recommend coming with or shopping for friends or family who like to cook or bake, as I think they would get a lot out of it (there is also a records store next door to explore!) The store is a tight space packed to the brim with cookbooks, magazines, vintage clippings all focused on cooking and the kitchen. There are also some very cute tea sets and antique kitchen gadgets for sale. Some seating for perusing items as well. When we came, we unfortunately missed out on the box of clippings which also had handwritten recipes. The service was also friendly, and we bought a very cute set of recipes for desserts with raisins! I thought the value of the store was generally good and rewards people who are willing to spend some time digging and treasure hunting in the store. This is one of the spots that makes nyc so special!”

“Patelson; gone from the neighborhood.Rayburn: now dancewear, ok, but not staff paper or scores. Rest assured that the Juilliard bookstore is available for our no-time-to-Amazon musical paper-based needs, plus lots of school spirit swag.”

“Absolutely lived this bookstore. It's so warm and welcoming, I could not stop perusing the books and just enjoying the whole vibe of the place. I wish they had a few more chairs, but then no one would ever leave. It's simply nice to flip through pages of an actual beautiful book rather than read it on your laptop. The prices seemed reasonable, and the experience just wrapped a bow on the whole visit. Loved it.”

“I urge people to patronize Kitchen Arts & Letters. They have been written up many times. They are famous. But I am adding to the acclaim for a specific reason. If we like to drop into a bookstore to browse, or have a question we would like answered by someone with expertise, then we must patronize these establishments and ensure the proprietor can remain in business. I fear that with the advent of the internet, which is now no longer new or novel but simply part of our lives (as in this social media platform), and the consolidation of retail shops into international chains, an independent such as this -- with a specialty -- will be threatened. I am as guilty as anyone else. Most of what I buy, and not only to read, is delivered to my home. But there is a delight to visiting a place such as Kitchen Arts & Letters that the delivery of a box cannot generate. For one thing, you are seeing human beings and interacting with them. For another thing, you can look around -- an algorithm can recommend similar items, but that is not the same as spotting a title on a shelf and realizing it would make a perfect gift. That is why I visited. A work colleague is departing. I'd like to believe we will remain friends. She is expecting a pile of gifts, and she has said so, which is endearing and funny. I have a few already procured. I was searching for something specific, and I might still go online, but I found three different possibilities, all of which I purchased, and based on recommendations by the helpful guy who came right up. This individual loves to cook. She also is a fan of horror movies. So I was trying to find something unique that might blend those together. I ended up with not campy items, but a volume entitled Blood, another Bone, and an Anthony Bourdain graphic novel with similar themes. I expect to go back. Although I have a library, scattered in various venues, I am not an enthusiast for this genre. Looking around, however, I am very much tempted. There is so much here. Cookbooks sell well. They are a type of publication that people value. They are handed down over generations. That is good for the world and for families. We all could learn if we slowed down and prepared a meal at home.”
