The site of the former Glen Mall (3850 Mystic Valley Pky) in Medford will soon be the locations for two popular stores - Dicks' Sporting Goods and Petco.
The companies recently signed agreements to occupy the location. They are in response to the shopping center's closing of around 40 stores that started in February. The only two stores that remain there are Marshalls and Kohls.
Dick's Sporting Goods, Petco and Wegmans will soon open alongside the Kohl's and Marshalls stores. According to a Notice of Lease that was filed with the Middlesex South District Registry of Deeds Sept. 30, Wegmans' signed a 25-year lease to open a grocery store at the site. Plans for the new store was made public last year.
According to the Petco lease, it will take up nearly 20,000 square feet and end Jan. 31, 2028. Dick's Sporting Goods' lease will end 10 years after the start date of the rental agreement and will take close to 50,000 square feet.
The Medford City Council held its meeting on Dec. 13, approving a Special Permit that would let Petco raise or keep livestock such as kennels and animal stables at the store.
Brian Dugdale works with the Goulston & Storrs law firm. He said no cats or dogs could be boarded overnight; just small animals such as small birds, fish, small mammals, etc. The store will offer services for cats and dogs like veterinary services, grooming services, etc.
According to Vice President of New England Development Paul Cincotta, Petco will hire between 25 and 30 full and part-time jobs, opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 9 p.m.
Cincotta said the new stores are set to open fall 2017.
Petco currently has over 50 stores in Massachusetts. Dick's Sporting Goods has 18 locations throughout the state.
