We are in Charleston for a few days and were excited to check out Second State. We were running short on time so drove over there as fast as we could, but it took us a while to find parking. Once we found a spot, it happened to be right in front of the shop, so we were excited that we made it on time before they closed at 5. We walked up at 4:56 and their doors were locked. I worked in a coffee shop for years so I understand wanting to get outta there early, but if you say you're open until 5 then please stay open until 5. We wasted time trying to get to you. Wish I could give you 5 stars but didn't get the chance to.

Coffee is delicious but they place their music too loud for me to get any work done there! Which is a bummer bc it's such a cute spot to set up shop with a laptop.

Great coffee and pastries. Seeked out this shop when I was in town after ordering their beans over mail multiple times. The shop seems a little slammed doing pour overs as the employee doing the pour overs was in charge of that and the register. After my partner finished half of her drink during our wait for my pour over I ended up just asking for a drip which was fantastic.

Our barista was extremely helpful, offered great recommendations, and our coffee was excellent. We tried the iced brown sugar latte and it was fantastic!

Currently staying at an Air B&B (Neptune - Urban style) where the hosts most graciously left a bag of Second State, Heavy Weight. Perfect blend of Charleston charm to kickstart the day! Cheers.

We normally like this place. Nice vibe and good coffee. However Saturday my wife and I went in store 40 minutes prior to closing time. There was no line. Barista clearly focused completely on getting store prepped for closing and barely acknowledged our presence. Finally came back with empty trash bag and told us it will be awhile. Seemed strange. 5 plus minutes pass and ,like dummies, my wife and I are still standing there hoping to order iced coffees. Out from the back bathroom and kitchen area comes the barista, this time with his trash bag completely full. Still no words from him to us. He takes the trash bag out to the dumpster evidently please as can be. He was even happier when he saw that my wife and I had enough and we left. I feel bad for the owner of this establishment, they would have cringed at the terrible level of service provided. We drove over to Metto coffee and were treated as customers should be.

I always use Yelp to help me find local coffee shops when I'm traveling. I then have to call the shops to make sure they make in-house syrups, and they do! I also noticed their coffee at a few shops around a Charleston, but I went for the latte, of course. Picked up an iced lavender latte on my stroll to the Waterfront Park in Charleston. @secondstatecoffee they make all of their syrups in house and wow so refreshing and delicious! Highly recommend! And very safe with covid restrictions in place. very photogenic spot, cute area to walk around with your latte and head to King Street for some shopping. Check out coffee shops on IG: @MI_Mug

Disovered via yelp app. Had a little work thAng, thAng recently in Charleston, was staying about a mile away at the Homewood suites... on my way to my daily gig I would stop here and pick up a cup... because the house coffee at the Homewood... well, that's house coffee at the Homewood... simply N.G... (I also tried out the Kudu Kudu one morning too, to mix it up... but this was more better) The coffee is really good. The cup a little small for my taste, would prefer a larger cup... But its definitely good. Not world class blow your doors off, but it is solid all around. Would recco.. and would return if in the yay area again.... yay area!?!!!! like that, tell the people that forty water is back!

I really love this spot. It’s my favorite coffee spots in Charleston. They take their coffee seriously and I really appreciate that. I have visited here countless times since they first opened and never had less than a great experience.

Love the atmosphere. The cappuccino did not have enough foam, it was more like a latte. Either way it was excellent espresso.

Friendly and helpful barista, excellent pour overs [they roast their own beans], and fluffy, decadent quiche. The naturally processed and honey processed coffees were excellent!

I really wanted to like this place...but the service was less that stellar with what seemed like grumpy college students making/serving middle of the road coffee. We did however LOVE the baked goods! Wherever they get them from, they're doing that part right.

Smooth, creamy iced vanilla latte - one of the best i’ve had! Kind and quick service. Highly recommend.
