I grew up shopping at Northwoods Mall, and as a kid and young teen, most of my clothes came from JC Penney. Other stores have come and gone, but JC Penney is still here. Recently, I visited the mall on a whim. It was raining, traffic was bad, and the mall is a fun place to wait out Charleston's traffic woes. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but noticed a large Sephora store within JC Penney, as well as a Forever 21 area downstairs and a large Disney selection upstairs. Speaking of stores in Northwoods Mall coming and going, I know I'm not the only person who remembers the Disney store? I guess it lives on, within JC Penney. Unfortunately, this JCP needs some TLC, and I can't give it a high rating. The store felt like a sauna when I walked in. The air conditioning system is faulty, and when it's over 90 degrees outside, it's impossible to comfortably shop. I'm pretty cold natured, so when I'm hot, you know it's hot. The "down" escalator was broken and closed, and apparently the elevator also overheated today. I shopped upstairs and had to walk around upstairs looking for the stairs to get back to the ground floor. This is a huge accessibility concern, especially for older or handicapped people. Another couple and I walked around the second level to find those stairs. The stairs are marked "Emergency Exit" and in a corner by the suitcases and luggage. I wasn't sure if those were the right stairs, so I was comforted to see the ground level of JCP once I turned the corner. The only operational dressing rooms are on the ground floor. Thankfully, that area has portable air conditioning units, so the dressing rooms are slightly cooler. They're in the ladies section, which has to be a nightmare for families since all children's clothes are upstairs. The staffed checkouts are in the men's department, although if there's a line you can check out in Sephora. The employee said the store has had staffing issues, which is understandable. I wouldn't want to work in retail, without air conditioning, and in an inaccessible workplace. I'm thankful for the Sephora employee who did show up to work and was nice enough to let me check out there on a hot day in a crowded store. I gave a two star rating mainly because of the nice employee at Sephora and the good sales. While JCP is a family-friendly department store, it can't be easy for families with multiple kids to shop here with a broken air conditioner, escalator, elevator, and only one set of dressing rooms. Back to school season is almost here, and I hope the infrastructure issues are fixed soon. If not, skip JCP and head to the other department stores in the mall.

I really wanted to get a haircut. Set up appointments for our family online. We arrived on time and checked in. My Mother got a great haircut by Jan. But, the person scheduled to cut my hair never came out, she was too busy I guess. I say I guess because we never got updates. My daughter was supposed to get her haircut by the same stylist after me. I waited 75 minutes and never saw her. The worst part is we stood there the whole time. Multiple stylists walked through and didn’t check on us. The receptionist walked into the salon after thirty minutes and never came back so she didn’t have to see us uncomfortably waiting (chairs would be nice). I hate leaving a bad review, but I sent an email to customer service on Saturday and didn’t get a response that way either! Just awful.Service: Haircut

I scheduled a consultation for a clipper cut and was told to be on time to meet with a "master stylist". I arrrived on time but was told that the stylist was busy. The stylist then came out to meet with me and reassured me that she could cut my hair on the following day. She took my name and number but never called me after her shift nor on the next day to schedule the appointment. I was also quoted a higher price in the salon ($40) than what's listed on their site ($28) and per my initial phone inquiry. There were so many red flags about this experience. I'm glad I didn't get a call back.

We were glad to find a dress for my daughter but it was almost ruined with the rudeness and inpatient cashier. He didn't even have the decorum to thank us after our purchase. My daughter said to him, have a good evening. His response was "unhun" you too. Really!!! So customers like us don't assist in your paycheck, we just annoy you with our presence! With service like his we can shop elsewhere and wait for this JC Penny to close its doors like all the others. The 3 stars are only because we found the dress we were seeking and the sweet young lady at the dressing room.

Made my appointment online and arrived early. Onlineprice quoted was $18 for a short haircut. After waiting I was told the wrong price was quoted online and price can be higher depending on the stylist. I was then told by stylist the price would be 40 dollars. This is false advertising. I will not be back.

3 times I’ve made an appointment and have been canceled on within an hour and a half of my appointment stating the stylist wouldn’t have time to do what I requested. Tried calling for a week before booking the appointment online no one ever answered nor called back. Salon states they are open until 7 however I got told they leave at 5

Staff is usually so happy and helpful. The store isn't very organized which makes it hard to find things but they have everything you need and will help you find something if needed.
