Hours: Florence Lauderdale Animal Services is described as an amazing local shelter where the people who work and volunteer have hearts of gold, going above and beyond with love and compassion. They are kind and considerate, helping not only community animals but also animal owners, foster homes, and adoption families. However, it is also a sad place because it is so overrun by animals that humans have neglected. There is a ridiculously high number of animals being surrendered or returned by residents, and even people from outside the county will lie to get animals into this shelter due to its “no kill” reputation. This over-populates the shelter, creating a recipe for disaster with a small staff, few volunteers, and high turnover. The sheer volume of animals makes it hard to take care of them, and because of that they do have to euthanize. Employees become stressed, angry, and jaded. The issues are based solely on residents and individuals who do not take responsibility, failing to get pets spayed or neutered and being abusive and irresponsible. People need to help by donating food, boxes for cat litter, or blankets. The community, county, and city should donate and help out more. The employees truly care and want to save them all, but it is a long, endless battle.
