I’ve dined in, had take out, and ordered delivery from La Colonial. Probably my favorite restaurant I’ve found so far in Huntsville. Everything I’ve tried is excellent.Dietary restrictions: Good gluten free options

Listen, I know a lot of people say they know good food but I genuinely mean it when I say I know good food. This food isn’t good food, it’s amazing. No other place I’ve been to comes close to their consistency. Please try the Shrimp and Steak burrito if you don’t believe me.

QUE BUENO! Found this spot by accident. Located inside a Mexican grocery store the dining room is colorful and appears ultra clean. The service was off the charts and the food was equally as good. The red sauce, which is made daily, is NOT for the weak of heart. It was sooooo good that I bought 8 oz of it to go! Definitely a hidden gem.

The combination of authentic, budget-friendly Mexican cuisine and outstanding service truly sets this place apart. The restaurant's menu boasts a variety of mouthwatering dishes that capture the essence of Mexican flavors flawlessly. Equally impressive is their supermarket section, stocked with genuine Mexican ingredients that bring my home cooking to the next level. The attentive and friendly staff contribute to the overall warm and inviting atmosphere. Without a doubt, this establishment has secured its spot as a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Mexico without breaking the bank.

The Birria was really good. I would have liked more onions and cilantro. But I ordered on door dash. The consomé was very flavorful!! The beans and rice were the best I've ever had.

I saw an article listing the best restaurants in each state for birria tacos. I usually start reading these types of articles and stop after I read Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia restaurants. I was shocked to find out that the best birria tacos are served in this supermarket. I convinced hubs to go there and boy were we surprised. When we walked inside, we both remembered that we had been to this location 12-13 years ago. There was no taqueria back then. Now the supermarket is on the right side of the business and the taqueria is to the left in a separate room. We ordered the birria tacos, 4 street tacos, burrito supreme and fried tamales to go. After one bite of the birria tacos, both of us excitedly declared they are the best birria tacos we have ever eaten. I recall 12 people in the restaurant while we waited on our food and 10 out of the 12 were eating birria tacos. The consommé that accompanied the birria tacos was delicious and not full of greasy fat floating on the top. I have had these tacos at other places and this restaurant scores five stars whereas the other places are three stars. There is a huge difference! The street tacos were loaded with tasty al pastor and chicken. They had onions and cilantro and were excellent. The burrito supreme was huge with wonderful flavors and that burrito supreme is better than the burritos I have gotten from local food trucks that people praise highly. The fried pork tamales were very good. The crispy texture made them taste great. The taqueria is no frills with tables and chairs. A young lady who speaks English brings menus and takes orders. To pay one must go to the supermarket side of the store. I asked the man at the register about the onions and peppers in a bowl brought to each table with red and green sauces. He said he could put a container in our bags to go. They were habanero, jalapeños and other vegetables. We declined. Habanero peppers are too hot for us old folks. The red sauce is spicy. The green sauce isn't as spicy but still packs a punch. We are happy with lime on tacos so no problem. If you are up for adventure eating, please stop by. I love menudo and pozole and will have to try them. Also I am curious about the ramen. : ). The food here is phenomenal.

Good market if you want to get some authentic Mexican food at the restaurant or some food to cook your own meals. They usually have yams and a few "ground foods," but the last time I went, they didn't have any yams. Also, they usually have nice selections of plantains and some other choice goods.

If you're looking for true hole in the wall and some amazing Mexican food, I highly recommend checking out La Colonial. It's a hidden gem located inside a Mexican supermarket off of Jordan Lane. The interior is plain, but it is inside a Latin supermarket. One bite and you will agree their quesa-birrias are cooked perfectly sand seasoned to perfection. As a foodie, I can say that it's one of the most authentic Mexican dining experiences I've had and definitely worth trying. I've eaten at many other restaurants around town, and a lot of them are not as flavorful.

One of my very favorite places to get Mexican food! Plus I get to shop for my Mexican food ingredients in the grocery store that is in with the restaurant. And the prices are great! The Queso Birria Tacos are the star of the show here. Crispy, meaty, cheesy, and so flavorful! I rarely go without getting them. I did opt for the Birria Pizza the last visit and it's really good too. I just prefer the tacos. My second favorite dish is the Shrimp Ceviche Tostada. Simple and delicious! The tortilla chips are perfection and complement the red sauce and the guacamole perfectly. The whole fried tilapia is crispy outside, tender inside, and just delicious! I also really enjoy their Shrimp Cocktail and fried tamales. This is the first place I think of when craving Mexican food in Huntsville!
