This store is really cute, and the staff were super friendly! Lots of variety toys (including quite a few old toy reproductions) and a large selection of ribbon as well. Lots of little brands stationed throughout the store selling anything from home goods to pet products. Truly a variety experience!

Went in looking for lego. I expected price to be retail plus local hobby store 10-20% surcharge. Actual price was literally above 150% markup. Anything you find here will be vastly cheaper somewhere else.

I can usually find materials for art, my greeting cards, craft stuff and always some stuff I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. Dolls and their clothing, toys and games and most everything I am looking for. My favorite store.

ALL TIED UP WITH A BOW! Smith's Variety is one of those stores, where you walk in and don't exactly know what you are looking for but always seem to find something. It's located on one of the side streets on Church Street in Mountain Brook. When I looked in up online, I could not find a website for the store, though I think that would be a great idea for them to have a website. However, it does make a lot of sense why they do not. They physically want their customers and regulars to come into the store and find something they might not have been looking for from the get go. They have well.. a variety of items in the store. A little bot of everything. (candy, stationary, toys and houseware) to name a few. It is a very spread out store every item has a section there are no random things in random places around the store. It is organized. Honestly, it is the perfect place for party planners or event planners to find a little bit of everything. Before I moved to Birmingham, I used to make gift baskets. I would have love to have a store like Smith's Variety near me. They have the exact type of ribbon that I would use in all different colors and design as well as amazing inventory of the various items that I would typically put into the gift baskets. If I ever go back to creating those baskets, I will definitely be coming back to Smith's variety to collect some marvelous items.

Have you ever obsessed over something until it just drives you bonkers? Well, I do! My latest obsession is cellophane gift bags sized 14.75 inches tall x 7 inches wide x 4 inches deep. Iridescent or clear - either "finish" is excellent. Okay, one would think a big box craft store (you know Hobby Lobby, Michael's) or even Party City would have these, right? ...nope. Moving along, certainly Amazon has them - they have *every*thing! ...nope. After searching for more than a month, I texted my long time best friend who lives in B'ham because she was my inspiration for this obsession. Here's the deal: (per Karen's M.O.) you get this size bag, put 1-2 pieces of tissue paper inside, add any given gift (well almost any), tie it with a bow and voila! You have an all purpose, all occasion gift wrap solution!!!! BF Karen turned me on to Smith Variety, where she sources her magical bags. (Thanks Karen!) Although they do not have a web site, they are so quick to respond to Facebook messages, it's really more convenient than shopping online or in store (although I do plan to visit in person sometime!) The owner Brad (and his wife, I believe her name is Amy) helped me find a slightly larger clear cello bag and I ordered 2 dozen and asked them to please ship. They promised to do so a week ago Monday. A few days passed and I hadn't received them and I FB messaged them again and Brad provided the FedEx tracking # and estimated delivery date. Long story short, FedEx delivered the bags ~ 3 days past the promised delivery date, and in the interim, Brad priority USPSd me a second set of bags, which I offered to pay for. He refused to charge me for them and now I can enjoy effortless wrapping and move on to my next obsession! Thanks, Brad, Amy, and Smith's Variety for your kindness and for helping me simplify my (dreaded) gift wrapping chore -- and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

Went to Birmingham and had to visit since my granddaughter’s name is Smith! Such a fun place had everything under the sun! They fell in love with rubber snakes for their granddad’s Christmas present!! Cashier was scared of snakes so someone else was helpful and jovial! Merry Christmas to all!

For my first few years of living in Birmingham, I was not sure what Smith's Variety was all about. I tend to avoid stores that you cross your fingers that they may just have what you want. While Smith's falls in the category, they have come through for me every time. And it was all when I started asking for random things at work. "I need this very specific size card in this specific color". Go to Smith's. "I need a random, fun toy for a kids birthday last minute". Go to Smith's. "I need a confetti cannon right this minute". Go to Smith's. The staff is always so friendly and they are so well organized. A store I never would have found myself in, was thrown on me through suggestion. I even enjoy just walking around and checking out everything they have. Great spot.
