Oak Mountain State Park is a beautiful and cool place with gorgeous scenery, fantastic views, and a lovely, refreshing atmosphere. It offers an incredible variety of activities, including an amazing 18-hole golf course, miles of trails for walking, hiking, jogging, mountain biking, and BMX, as well as equestrian facilities with horse barns and trails for those who bring their own horse. Visitors can enjoy fishing, kayaking, paddle boating, and paddleboarding on the lake, or visit the Alabama Animal Center and wildlife center. There is a dog park, a children’s play area, archery, and camping with large, mostly level sites that have picnic tables and fire rings. The park is very nicely laid out and well-made with beautiful roads. It features a wide variety of well-marked trails, from easy to difficult, with lots of scenic attributes like the hike to Peavine waterfall. The setting is simple and lovely. While the park is not too far from shopping and other attractions, some note the state park fees are quite high. A few concerns mentioned include a lack of garbage receptacles near some campsites and the constant hum of golf carts. Overall, the staff is friendly and does an amazing job keeping the park clean, making it a favorite destination for many.
