The owner of this place clearly does not want to operate the public portion of this range. I attempted to shoot there this Saturday morning. I have been shooting there on and off for nearly 20 years. I had a pistol permit that had expired two days earlier and was turned away by this place. The state of Alabama no longer requires a pistol permit but this place still does. The no cash transactions is a nice touch too. Each time I go there, they have new signs with new regulations and rules. It feels like going to the DMV. Needless to say the public range was empty as was the parking lot. The parking for the private sections of the range were also empty. Just close the public range if you don’t want people to use it. I just went on down to the Cahaba WMA public range and had a great day of shooting. FOP range gets one star based on nostalgia alone. There is nothing to recommend this place now.Additional comments 10/16/23. I appreciate your timely response to my initial review. I can understand your attempt to keep the wrong element from using your shooting facilities. I am sure the members appreciate this. I would not want careless and or intoxicated/impaired people shooting next to me either. I was clearly neither intoxicated nor impaired when I entered the office Saturday. I did have a valid driver's license and very recently expired pistol permit showing the same address and photo as my driver's license. My firearms were unloaded and in their cases. I had taken time off work Saturday to test fire a new rifle and sight in an older one. Needless to say, I was frustrated to be turned away. Your employee working in the office was not rude but was also completely inflexible and legalistic per your direction as he told it.I can understand the no cash policy during the early days of Covid, but that is three years ago now and there is no good reason not to accept cash payments at your facility. US currency is "legal tender for all debts public and private". The Covid argument is completely spurious at this point. It is your business and you can run as you see fit. Perhaps this business model is a money maker for you. It is definitely not an inviting atmosphere for someone who is interested in frequenting your range a few times a year much less a first time visitor. I do most of my shooting on a private farm, but especially during deer season I don't like to disturb my neighbors hunts with sustained gunfire. It was nice to be able to come to your range occasionally and know it was a good place to shoot. You really should make it clear that yours is not a public range and that you are not really interested in the general public shooting there though.

After slangin’ a lot of lead over the years, this is by and large the best range I have experienced from the standpoints of value, enjoyment, safety and customer service. The ROs and management of the range place safety above all else while still maintaining courteous, helpful service to members and non-members alike. As a member, you get to enjoy the full breadth of what the facility offers; the value of which is immense when you consider what you get for a yearly membership. The only intolerance that the management has is unsafe and irresponsible handling of firearms; their safety rules are common sense and most importantly enforced. Act like a moron with a remote hole puncher in your hands, and you’ll be asked to vacate the premises - which is exactly what competent range management should do. Be a responsible shooter and you’ll find the best place in central Alabama to go pew pew at. 10/10, will clang steel at as long as this place is open.

FOP is the best outdoor range in the Birmingham area that doesn't require an extensive membership process.Their rimfire and pistol courses of fire are honestly the best I've seen. Their rifle range is only 100 yards, but other than CMP or private gun clubs, that's pretty standard. I highly recommend them.

Don’t waste your time.. Aside from the rude old man at the counter we arrived almost two hours before closing and was told it to late. There literally wasn’t a single person there, using the range so it wasn’t booked. We returned the next day, this time I forgot my permit so I told my husband I’ll just wait in the car. The rude old man said I couldn’t wait in the car we both had to leave. Being a business owner myself I don’t allow employees to be rude especially when they are at the front of my business. Not saying we were being discriminated against but our second time there, a person was in front of us and he wasn’t talked to in the same manner. The clerk never even looked up when talking to us. We will just go somewhere else..

Range is pretty good, not the best but definitely better than the WMA ranges in terms of setup and safety. Membership is pretty easy to obtain, just need to follow the requirements on their page. Only real complaint is their attitude. Not fond of people who call out critical reviews on Google or yelp on their social media page or remove comments on such channels. A pro 2A establishment should also be pro 1A. There are much better alternatives in the Birmingham Area if you are willing to drive, if not, then this one will serve your needs. Again, just realize criticism is not wanted nor listened to at this range. Still can’t believe they blocked me on their social media page because I supported someone’s opinion. I don’t even get that treatment from the most liberal of establishments.

Awesome range. Always clean, calm, and well maintained. The membership is well worth it, much better than the other indoor ranges I’ve been to in Birmingham. 100% recommend

The range itself is nice, good assortment of targets at various distances. The lower rating is for this reason, you have to be careful on the public range based on who is there . I’ve met a lot of cool people there, more than once though i encountered inexperienced shooters being unsafe, sweeping others with their muzzle. The range officer was more focused on admonishing a shooter that may or may not have shouldered a stabilizing brace, while a member continued to fire after the light change & the range is supposed to be cold. Overall, it comes down to who is there & who is running the range.Edit: I would like to add these incidents occurred over 2 years ago. Hopefully this is not the caseAlso what is up with the social media for the place? It’s always a long winded boomer rant reminiscent of internet 1.0 era.

I am deeply disappointed in the changes and the discriminatory treatment they gave me in that shooting range, in addition to asking for my driver's license, they demanded my weapons license, which I also have! As an American citizen, I am very disappointed in you after enjoying these facilities on other occasions. Thank you but I will not spend my money with you anymore

Great place to shoot. Has been a well maintained facility for many, many years.
