Tried calling for resources for a woman who is pregnant with other children being domestically abused by her spouse and is afraid to call. Some horrible woman who claimed to be an advocate shut me down rudely and told me to make the victim call. I said no I would like to get resources for her and forward them so she has them. Then I was told to be quiet and treated like some child in the principal office. I told her do not talk to me in that manner and that I wanted a supervisor. She put me on enternal hold. I hung up and called back and the desk clerk put me into some voice mail. I am now wondering what does AWAIC truly stand for if women in abusive situations at risk cannot be helped?

Awful experience working with this organization. My caseworker was dismissive and rude to me. Offered to help pay my rent for 3 months which switched to 2. Those months my rent wasn't paid til the beginning of next month therefore almost causing me to get evicted. My caseworker, Dani is a liar. She treated me like I didn't matter. She needs to be tested for drugs. It seemed as if they'd rather have me and my daughter that had a disability go into their shelter than help me maintain the roof I have over my head now. I had to call the supervisor to get my rent payments submitted then she was supposed to pay $275 in late fees. Told me she'd submit the payment and then never did. 4 months later, my landlord tried to evict me yet again because of the balance that was never paid. The last time I called for a supervisor I left a very detailed message about my concerns, never got a call back, still waiting for that call months later. Have not had anyone follow up or check on me to make sure me and my daughter were ok. AWAIC complicated my life more than it needed to be during a time that was very traumatic for my kids and myself. I missed one call from Dani, the weekend goes by and she threatened to not submit my rent and drop me when I can NEVER get into contact with her. She's a terrible person. She should not be working with abused women. Was told I could get counseling and when I asked was then told they prioritize the women at the shelter so it could be months before I talk to their counselor which I need the most at this time.. I'm on my own and working and keeping my bills paid ON TIME no thanks to this agency

This place don't have boundaries i was there with my son and we shared a room with a mentally unstable lady that came in and out the room all night from getting high & kept the lights on we also shared a room with another lady with her daughter where that lady put her hands on my 3 year old son because she said he snatched a toy from her three yr. old daughter I told the front desk they didn't take it seriously and at all the lady was not removed and instead they told me they was going to move my room then i said no she should move then the lady then yelled at my son for being in the walk way after then caused and argument of course me being black they all made it seem like i was in the wrong didn't throw her out she stayed i left because i didn't want to have to get into it with the lady and risk going to jail it being a domestic violence shelter they show have handled my situation with care and swiftly i relived the trauma i once endured. this place needs better management and caring ppl i have called up there to speak with supervisors about the situation no response and it really crushed me as a person to feel like me or my son was less important then them .

I've been there in the past & they helped me then & I've been trying to get help though their service & I got denied because I'm Alaska Native and The Staff Thinks that I'm Intoxicated Because of my RaceBecause of my Race That Is Very Wrong what kind of Protection is that ? I said what I had to say to that lady & she just doesn't have a heart. Every Single Person In that team will Definitely Have Judgement when it's Their Time .

My experience at this shelter was 20+ years ago. I do hope things have improved since then. I'm giving this review 5 stars in good faith that the women there are treated fairly and with compassion. My time there was traumatic, I was roomed with a drug user and subsequently kicked out with my 15 month old daughter because I shared a room with that woman and drugs were found. It may seem strange that I waited 20 years to say something but even though I've personally overcome many obstacles and gained wisdom throughout the years, I still have certain traumas that have stuck with me mentally. Being an abused young woman with a baby, nowhere to go, no family and during the winter was cruel. I plead my innocence to deaf ears. I do pray there are better policies and more compassionate staff now.

This wonderful shelter accepted me an my boys. They provided us with a roof over are head and beds to sleep in. It wasn't the easiest thing to walk in to. With having 3 teen's. However, AWAIC was our safe place. We got locks for our lockers, no one ever stole from us. We got new bedding and towels. Many toiletries to shower. They helped me get into housing. They provided good warm meals. They gave my boys treats if they completed a chore. I will always be humbled by my experience here. Thank you all for the help. We are doing wonderfully and have our own place.

AWAIC is a wonderful organization. The negative Google reviews don't do this place justice. AWAIC is getting into the grittiest of situations and helping people.

My original review stated that they were awesome and very helpful from 3 years ago. This year I have no idea what happened but if I could give them my - 5 * I would. They shipped me and my son out of state do DV and left us to rot in another state. With many phone calls there without any return phone calls or follow-ups to see how my son and I are doing. We've been in the state for 3 months homeless and hungry without anybody there calling and checking to do a follow up with us like they are supposed to do. Started back when they stopped helping out and making empty promises and left us hanging for 3 months

The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The hours are flexible and they really make an effort to work with people. No set check in time. Which is nice. They are also very careful about people's privacy and are helpful for resources in the community.
