Beautiful store with local artwork. The owner, Curtis, was super friendly and helpful! I would love to go back next time I visit Ketchikan.

We decided to take a look in here because my daughter is an artist and was interested in taking a look around. The gallery us on the second floor of a building, above a Harley Davidson shop. It's actually easy to keep walking by outside .Once inside though, it was amazing. We were at once greeted by Curtis, the owner, who happily answered any question my daughter had about artists and their works. There were paintings, carvings, photographs, each made by local artists. The media range from canvas to wood to tusk, and even mammoth molar. My daughter found something she liked, and we decided we would not blow our budget before we came here the next time.

We visited Alaska Galleries at the end of April 2022 and were very impressed with the beautiful pieces displayed there. I was particularly taken with a sculpture entitled "First Breath" depicting a mother humpback pushing her newborn to the surface for its first breath. Although the piece was a bit pricey ($500), I decided to buy it. Because I was on a cruise and would have to fly home, I chose to have it shipped to me so it wouldn't get broken in my luggage. The owner, Curtis Nelson, assured me that best of care would be taken in packing the sculpture, and that it would be insured to cover any possible damage done during shipping.I was so excited when the sculpture arrived. You can imagine my disappointment when I discovered all the flippers of the mother and of the baby had broken off. We contacted Alaska Galleries about it, and while Curtis was responsive at first, he is now no longer returning our calls. Three months later, we have not seen any kind of recompense.I originally thought Alaska Galleries was a classy and honorable establishment. I am very sad and disappointed to be wrong.

I happened upon this place accidentally because I was in the Harley Davidson store and noticed it as I was going back down the stairs. What caught my eye was all of the local beautiful art available. I was speaking to the owner Curtis about the photographs of the northern lights and if he'd ever seen them himself. He went into the back and brought out this beautiful photograph taken right there in Ketchikan of the northern lights. It was on a metal print and the price was so reasonable compared to a lot of the other shops I had visited. He offers shipping and he will mount it for you. I ended up going back to the ship without making a purchase and felt such regret that I ran back before we left and I purchased that photograph. It was just so beautiful and made me feel such joy especially because I recognized the area where the photograph was taken. Curtis shipped me the framed print to California and I just want to mention how great the packaging was. It was delivered in perfect condition. I am so happy with my purchase that i just wanted to share it with everyone. It's so important to support local stores and vendors in the cities that the cruise ships visits. They do own a lot of the store fronts especially the jewelry stores. So just be aware of this and try to shop local.
