About Chiniki Cultural Centre
The Chiniki Cultural Centre is a notable stop about an hour from Calgary, located on the left side of the road behind Smith’s restaurant, with parking and a nearby gas station. The building is beautiful and houses a small museum that shares the area's history, including information about the bands, the treaty, and the residential school system. The exhibits are educational and aim to teach visitors about the past while encouraging reflection and future progress. The centre also hosts creative displays, such as Christmas trees, which visitors find meaningful and beautifully crafted, reflecting the spirit of Christmas. Visitors can enjoy meals at Smitty’s restaurant attached to the centre, which offers good service and food, despite occasional staff shortages. Although some amenities like change tables for babies are missing, the overall experience is positive. The centre shows a genuine effort to share history and promote understanding, and visitors leave with a sense of respect and learning.

A Smitty’s to remember. At the foothills of the Rockies it is both restaurant and cultural centre. Food was typical of Smitty’s with an added “fry bread” selection which we tried and enjoyed. So glad we stopped here!
