Best store in Red Deer!!

The reason I’m writing this review is that I felt targeted today. I shop at Wine & Beyond because they have the best prices in the city for the liquor I prefer. I’d say I’m in the store probably once or twice a week. I’m familiar with most of the faces that are usually working in the store, and I like to think I’m also a familiar face to them. The staff has always been friendly and helpful.
Lately, I’ve noticed the staff is, how to say it, buzzing around me a lot more. I’ll be looking at something in one of the aisles, and a staff member will make sure to come along the aisle I’m in, ask if I’m looking for something. But then, I notice they’ll keep coming back and making a point of staying in the aisle, looking over at me, keeping close by, or frequently walking by at the ends of the aisle and surveying me. It’s starting to get off-putting and uncomfortable. I don’t feel welcome in the store.
Today, I came in around 6:45-6:50 PM. I knew what I wanted. I just wanted to be in and out as quickly as possible since I haven’t been enjoying the atmosphere in the store anymore. I was greeted by an older, blonde lady I see working there all the time. I smiled, waved, and headed straight back to the coolers to grab my Twisted Teas. There was a taller, young, red-haired man in the back. I was already wary and uncomfortable, so I was aware of what was happening. He was interrupted from eating whatever he was eating, looked to the front of the store. I’m guessing the lady at the front radioed him about me because he immediately looked at me through the glass wall of the cooler and rushed around the counter to follow me. He didn’t come in to greet me or ask me if I needed help. He came in to follow me around and watch me. Terrible, uncomfortable feeling. I felt gross and shameful, like some sort of criminal for just being there shopping. He looked at me as if caught in something when I looked at him and said hello, he mumbled something, going past the aisle I was in, and turned around, following me as I went to the exit of the cooler.
I was really upset. I waited in line, paid for my things, and left. The more I thought about it I wanted to go back in and say something to the manager I saw working around the front of the store. But I also didn’t want to go back in and be rude in the moment or come across as confrontational and be labelled as a problem customer.
I understand the associate who is stationed at that desk at the front of the store is as much there to help as keep an eye on who is coming into the store and radio about suspicious-looking people, or people with bags, baggy clothes, etc. I’m not unaware of that.
But today it really felt personal. It keeps happening. I get that I have brown skin, I’m indigenous, and have black hair. But something about greeting her kindly because I recognized her, and having her immediately follow felt personal. I noticed as I was waiting in line, a larger caucasian gentleman entered the store in a big baggy hoodie and bag, and she didn’t give him a second glance. No one touched their radio about him. I’m starting to get upset again, thinking about my experience, so I will end the review here.
I get that you need to be careful and suspicious; people and theft go hand in hand when it comes to liquor stores. I would just say, maybe find ways to ensure security in the store without making innocent, frequent customers feel uncomfortable and targeted by the obvious, not so discreet actions from your associates.
Thank you for reading

I wanted to buy a bottle of wine as a gift and decided to visit the store. I was so impressed with their selection and the size. The variety was mind-boggling. For instance, I really enjoy Portuguese wine and I felt they had a very large selection something I don’t even see from back home. I wish I had more time to explore their options, but I had a meeting to. The staff interacted with were very kind.. I managed to buy my bottle of wine, and they also have wine bags inside if your gifting. The parking lot is quite large so lots of parking space.
