This is a hidden gem on someone's property. The residents said a lady use to live there and she started the sanctuary and passed away, so the continued to honor her and provide lasting memories. There is a lot of bird feeders all over the property and tons of hummingbirds. They have seating throughout the property. The walking path is mainly dirt that's maintained. The drive to the sanctuary is unpaved super rocky and bumpy we still made it in a sedan though, there's not much parking and tight squeeze depending on time of day you are going. We would recommend for bird lovers.

Great place for watching hummingbirds! The hummingbirds we saw were Lucifer, Broad-billed, Anna's, Plain-capped Starthroat, and Rufous. Friendly staff and volunteers help you identify hummingbirds and answer questions.

Just stopped and looked from the entrance as we had our pup with us. I spoke to a volunteer to get information and he was more than willing to answer all of my questions. He gave me some of the history of the sanctuary which made the place even more awesome than what I had originally thought. The 5 minutes I was talking with him, I saw 3 birds I have never seen before. 1 of them I never knew of. He offered to let us in if the dog was mellow, but ours is not as he's a pup and is very curious lol. I would highly recommend this place if you love birds and wildlife. They have binoculars for you to use as well and I think there are some blinds that can be reserved also. Go check it out.

Quite the small facility but loaded with birds. Parking lot holds maybe 8-10 cars. Not many hummingbirds, but the Scott's Oriole is nice to see.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each of my visits so far. The landscaping and gardens are remarkable. The staff and volunteers are wonderful as well. They offer gorgeous postcards for $5. each. There is also a bookshelf display with many shared birding books! You can also enjoy the recipe for making your every own peanut butter bird suet at home!It is a wonderful peaceful environment.

Lots of birds to view in various seating areas around the owners yard. Rough road, so take your time. Small parking area. Binoculars were offered along with a kind greeting. Jay's, Cardinals, Goldfinch, Woodpeckers, etc ... Unfortunately, others talked constantly, complaining that there weren't many birds. ? It was difficult to enjoy. And, why would someone bring their dog to a bird sanctuary?? Maybe I could suggest a sign on "bird watching" etiquette?Playground: Various seating areas for viewing. Small children probably would not enjoy it.Restrooms: Restrooms are conveniently nearby.Dog-friendliness: Be polite and leave your dog at home.

Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary is an oasis you wouldn't expect to find in the heat and dryness of south Arizona, yet this place is brimming with life. Just sit tight, it doesn't take long for the birds to visit the feeders and the baths, the squirrels are running around along with lots of lizards, the insects are often more loud than hummingbirds fighting for their spot by the feeders. This place is truly amazing, thank you, Mary Jo and thanks goes also to the volunteers! ❤
