We rented a Jeep Wrangler for the trip, and honestly, it was the best decision we made. Initially, we considered taking our rental GMC Acadia, but that would have been a big mistake—we definitely would have gotten stuck. The terrain out there is no joke, especially the deep sand sections. We did see some people attempting it in vehicles like a Toyota 4Runner and Subaru Outback Wilderness, which might be fine if you’re very experienced with off-roading. But if you’re even slightly unsure or it’s your first time, I strongly recommend going with a proper 4x4 like a Wrangler, Bronco, or a lifted 4Runner. It just gives you that extra confidence and capability you’ll need. For timing, we rented the Jeep from 8 AM to 5 PM. The drive itself took us about 3 hours each way because we made a few scenic stops, including Navajo Bridge and Cliff Dwellers, which are definitely worth checking out. We spent around 3 hours at White Pocket—but honestly, that wasn’t enough. If you really want to explore, take photos, and soak in the surreal landscape, I’d recommend planning for at least 6–7 hours there. Also, if possible, try to avoid the midday heat and harsh lighting—early morning or late afternoon is much better. One thing that really stood out was Karly’s flexibility and kindness. We ran out of time to wash the Jeep before returning it, and he was completely understanding and told us not to worry about it at all. That level of customer service is rare and truly appreciated. A couple of extra tips: make sure to download offline maps since cell service is very limited, bring plenty of water and snacks, and be prepared for changing road conditions. This is a remote and rugged area, but that’s what makes it so special. Overall, this was one of the highlights of our trip, and Lake Powell Jeep Rentals made it smooth, safe, and unforgettable. If you’re heading to White Pocket, don’t think twice—rent from them and ask for Karly!”
