Tonto National Monument is a popular destination for those interested in Native American history and stunning scenic views. The site features well-preserved original structures and offers a small museum, gift shop, and informative displays. Visitors can enjoy remarkable views from the main site, including the Salt River and surrounding mountains, which are especially breathtaking during the hike up to the archaeological sites. The hike to the lower cliff dwelling is about a mile long with a 300-foot elevation gain, featuring switchbacks and benches along the way for resting or picnicking. The trail is steep but rewarding, with ranger staff available at the top to answer questions and provide detailed information. For access to the upper dwelling, a guided tour is required. The monument is accessible for those using mobile scooters, though it is not suitable for walkers or wheelchairs. About 1.6 miles round trip, the trail offers plenty of spots to stop, take photos, and enjoy the natural beauty, including cacti and wildflowers. The site is well-maintained, with clean bathrooms and friendly staff. Visitors, especially veterans with proper documentation, can benefit from free or discounted entry. Nearby attractions include the Theodore Roosevelt Dam and additional trails, making it a must-see for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
I only hiked to the lower cliff dwelling. A guide is required to get to the upper dwelling. Spectacular views along the trail and at the top. A docent was stationed at the top, to answer questions and point out interesting historical bits.
