This Murray Springs Clovis Site location has closed

Murray Springs Clovis Site is the oldest dig site in North America, proving people lived and hunted there over 12,000 years ago. It is a free site managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The main feature is a short interpretive dirt trail loop, under a mile long, with signs to read about the Clovis people and the area's history. The trail is not ADA friendly, requiring steps and a wash crossing that are sometimes damaged. The signs could use updating. For those visiting on their own, there is not a whole lot to see regarding the Clovis people, but it is a place to stroll and get away from the city. It is a great walk to observe the interaction of geology and ecology, including the legendary Black Mat. The site also serves as a trailhead for longer hikes into the surrounding San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. The loop trail is nice, but other trails can be overgrown and not marked well. The area is exposed with little shade, best visited in cooler weather, and it can get very hot and overgrown in summer. The area closes at dusk. It is dog friendly, but dogs must be leashed. Visitors should be cautious of cactus, coyotes, javelina, and snakes. There is a restroom with pit toilets, though they are sometimes locked. The wider river area is popular with illegal border crossers, and their trash may sometimes be found along the trails.
