They're used to make a loop, in a braided rope...more secure than a knot, while using less rope.
I found these on WesternMarine.com
Perhaps, you could find a way to get them. They also make em out of polyurethane (plastic), which are much less expensive...about $1-$5 each.
They'd come in handy, for anyone, whether cowboy or crafters.
