The centre houses an amazing variety of First Nations masks and artifacts. These are presented in a way that allows people to see them not just behind glass. The exhibits are very interesting and informative, explaining the purposes of specific artifacts. The centre also provides important cultural context. It shares the history of oppression, explaining how these important items were seized and how traditions were kept alive when they were forbidden. This history is sad but educational. The staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Presentations and tours by authentic community members are highly recommended. The centre includes an extensive art gallery and gift shop with a great selection of original Indigenous art and souvenirs. The U'mista Cultural Centre is a phenomenal experience, well-organized, and an absolute must when visiting Alert Bay. It is a highly recommended and deeply impactful destination.
