We have adopted two furry friends from the SPCA in Comox over the last three years. While we had six month time to neuter our cat, its another story with the puppy we got.
Just be aware about this policy!! We were able to adopt her in February 2024, super happy. When we got there to pick her up, we only were allowed to foster until she was spayed, she was 8 weeks old. We were a bit shocked but really wanted her to come home with us. While for most pups this practice is doable (if really not recommended!!) for ours it was devastating. Details aside, she will be incontinent for the rest of her life (which means daily medication), couldn’t be adequately socialized because of several after-surgery-infections and fights recurrent UTI’s because nobody noticed her hooded vulva (which most likely had gone if she would had been allowed to be spayed later)
Don’t get me wrong I DO understand the policy because stupid people wouldn’t fix their pups in time (even its paid for by SPCA) but there are puppies out there where the staff should take better precautions, be mindful with individuals and let them get fixed a bit later. It would have spared our lovely girl from SO MUCH suffering.
Get informed before you adopt and ask all these uncomfortable questions.
We really believe in adopting animals from the shelter but wouldn’t do it again under those circumstances…

Really not very nice lady as I was giving meds to the SPCA and she was rude. I had a whole bunch of other things to donate in my car, but was so put off by her. I also wanted to do some volunteer work but will not do so now as I cannot work with someone who was so rude!

They only open at noon? My senior dog died on the ferry over to comox and we needed someone to talk to about a place to keep his body while I went to Victoria for surgery. No one answered the phone number posted on the door. There were a few cars in the parking lot but it seems no one is there for emergency situations. Maybe they're great there, I don't know but in my situation there was no help from them which is surprising for an spca.

Absolutely amazing place. The people who work here are great. Such a positive environment and a joy to volunteer here. This place changed my life and how i view volunteering. I can only give 5 stars or I'd give more. They care not only about the animals there but create a positive work environment and a safe place for all critters. The education i received here in animal care and compassion can never be repaid. Thank you BC SPCA for all you do and continue to do for those who do not have a voice. You have gained a forever volunteer in me. I am truly humbled and grateful for all youve done for me and the animals under your care!
