I visited the Coquitlam Animal Shelter a while ago when I was looking to adopt a cat. While I ended up adopting from another city shelter, my experience here was good and certainly worthy of a review. The shelter is on the smaller side, and availability of cats/kittens will vary and depend on timing. The shelter was clean and had a covered outdoor catio as well. The animals seemed to be well taken care of and information that was provided on temperament/history seemed genuine. The staff were friendly, answered my questions patiently and encouraged me to spend as much time as I'd like and to re-visit anytime.I think this is a great service that gives local pets a second chance.Keep up the great work staff!

We adopted the loveliest kitty from the shelter. The staff was wonderful, very helpful, and made the whole adopting experience such a pleasant experience. You can tell they genuinely love their jobs and have the animals' best interest at heart.

Dropped in yesterday ( thur feb 29th) at 1.10 pm to see the cats my mom and I were going to all spca & adoption places i desperately wanted to adopt a younger cat, I just lost mine 2 days prior from a stroke ?. Anyway when I got there I was told it was by appointment only I joked and said ok can I call u and make an appointment for 5 mins she didn't laugh or find that funny. We said we came all the way from Vancouver ( my mom did ) she said nope come back tomorrow we said my mom doesn't live here. Anyway we went to leave but then I knocked on the door again to ask if they even had any younger cats to look at if I come the following day.The lady actually said she didn't know. I'm like the kennels are right there but you don't know . She told me to Google it and look. Im sorry that was rude and never mind the fact I would hope the staff would know if there was any young cats or not. I won't b going back there not ever to adopt . This is exactly why ppl buy and not adopt as even trying to get into see an animal at a shelter is not easy nor were they friendly or even helpful clearly I was a nuisance. Too bad I have a 14 yr dog my 10 yr cat just passed I own my home and work from home . I can give any animal a very happy and forever home ..Hopefully other shelters are more accommodating and know more about the animals they have..

People are the front desk are always really kind, and the cat room is so cute! They always have different cats when we go every few months now, which means all the cats are finding their forever homes, and that is so nice :)

People at the Coquitlam Animal Shelter are friendly, competent and patient. We encountered a problem with the online system for dog tag application. Without the very nice and helpful ladies at the shelter we would not managed to get a dog tag for our cocker spaniel. Thank you very much for the much appreciated help.

Relatively compact viewing areas, some cats in cages, others free roaming. Lots of cat beds everywhere, so plenty of opportunities for the more shy cats to hide.

Excellent and warm experience! Sam who was the peace officer who came to pick up a lost dog just before closing time at 8pm. The poor dog was clearly upset from missing her owner and wouldn’t leave the premise where I found her. Instead of forcing her to leave and get her in the van, Sam was amazingly patient and was sympathetic of what the dog was going through. He waited patiently while us ten neighbors trying to see if the owner was in the building and outside looking for her. Noting that this was after hours for Sam. And when it become apparent that the dog has to get on the van, Sam was very careful in getting her in and just exhibit the best of humanity. Thank you Sam! We appreciate your service !

After 3 visits to Coquitlam Animal Shelter, I’ve taken home a lovely bunny. All visits I had different staff members helping me out, they communicate behind the scenes about which animals are getting looked at by whom and it gives a sense they are united and really care for the animals well-being. I’d encourage anyone who’s looking at getting a pet to open up to the staff about your home and lifestyle, be open to suggestions, they hit the nail on the head with match-making, pulling me away from the bunny who’s picture brought me in to find the one I’d actually be best suited to. Great ethics here, excellent facilities, well cared for animals and humane matching policies that are cantered around the best for the animal. Thanks! I’ll recommend anyone I know looking for a new pet to be sure to check out your facility.

I wasn’t looking for another cat but my husband was really missing having a fur baby since our 2 previous cats passed away. We went to multiple shelters including BCSPCA. We saw many cats but none really called out to me. We went to Coquitlam animal shelter and really liked their set up. Cats were free to roam around a nice spacious area. The cats that didn’t do well with other cats had their own kennels that were decently sized.I was originally interested in Maverick. Super affectionate black kitty that just wanted to be loved and petted. However he got adopted before we were able to submit an application for him.We decided to take one last visit to see if there was a kitty that caught our eye before taking a break from looking. Immediately upon seeing pumpkin spice (now Dumpling) with her little cone of shame, I couldn’t get over how adorable her face is. Her soft meows and gentle pawing made my heart melt. She had such a friendly and happy demeanour despite just being spayed the day before. She also has white paws and pink toe beans and black paw pads as well as those adorable freckle on either side of her nose!!!Needless to say, she’s bonded quite quickly to my husband and has him wrapped around her paw ❤️Definitely recommend Coquitlam animal shelter!! Amazingly patient staff with no pressure to adopt.

Having to deal with the myopic views of the city regarding pets/animals and their political agenda is frustrating. If possible, pay on line.

My husband and I have been looking for a new cat to replace our old fellow that passed earlier in the year. We had checked out a few shelters and then came to the Coquitlam shelter. We found a sweet little ginger kitten, completed the paperwork and were called back the next day to get him. On our first visit we also fell in love with an adult calico but she had an adoption pending. About 5 days after we brought the kitten home they contacted us to say that adoption fell through. Now we have 2 beautiful rescues. Staff were great, friendly and helpful. Very pleased by the entire process.

My wife & I were visiting multiple animal shelters and came across the Coquitlam Animal ShelterThe staff and volunteers are super helpful and patient with no pressure to adopt right away. We originally were deciding btwn a few cats but never felt any pressure to make a decisionWe came across Pumpkin Spice last week and fell in love right away. The adoption was smooth process and even got provided a coupon for free vet exam to check for anything they may have missed and noted they would cover anything missedWould definitely recommend visiting this shelter if you’re in tri cities area looking to rescue #adoptdontshop
