Negative stars. What an absolutely abhorrent experience trying to talk to the owner about a dog's stay. Rude doesn't even begin to describe it. The owner can be all cute about being 'Oscar the grouch' all they want- but the fact is your dog is not safe with someone with this level of animosity and rage. Proceed at HIGH risk to you and your dog.

Had my 15 year old dobie and my 22 year old chihuahua board with Joe for 10 days while I was in Hawaii he sent texts pictures and let me know my angels were ok. I was very nervous since I had seniors but Joe made me feel safe. My babies did great. Highly recommend 2nd Home Dog Boarding!

Thank you Joe for taking such great care of my pups. They have never been boarded before and I was nervous, but that was all put to rest when you gave daily updates on them. Will definitely bring them back next time we go out of town.

Not just a kennel. Not just a “baby sitter”, Joe Altieri, owner of 2nd Home Dog Boarding, in Acton CA, has a heart for dogs unlike most other caregivers, and he has a profound understanding, a deeply rooted connection with your furry family members.

I take my dog Arnold here and he absolutely loves it! Joe and his wife love having him as well which is so comforting. It is such a good feeling knowing that your dog is happy and that the people watching him really care about him. They treat him like their own and that is what makes them unique to other dog boarding facilities. Joe admittedly said that he may not be much of a people person, but he is most DEFINITELY a dog person which is all that matters. And I like the guy!! Ha. Highly recommend taking your dog here.

This review is long overdue. I I had been looking for a place I could take my newest puppy Baci. I was really looking for somewhere he could interact with other dogs. I had gone to about three other places and it was restrictive because they didn't have dogs interact with each other. Came to Second Home and it was perfect! Joe was amazing! My Baci loved his time there! He was able to interact with all of Joe's dogs and he did really well with them! Joe's awesome!! Also, when I was initially setting up my appointments in providing paperwork. I was doing a lot of running around with errands. I happen to have my cat in the car we had gone to the vet. It was a hot day so I left the door open. Not thinking at all that my cat would even be remotely able to escape from him her carrier. Drove off and then just check the carrier and she wasn't there! Turned around and turned out she had escaped and crawled under one of the buildings on his lot. It took hours to finally capture her! She ran up a tree and he went OVER and BEYOND helping me to get her. Luckily no other dogs or wild animals had gotten to her!

This is the best dog boarding place in Southern California that my dogs have ever been to. They provide the best care and give the most love to our furry babies.

Joe took amazing care of my two babies for 3 weeks while I was recovering from surgery. I don’t do well without my dogs, and was scared finding a new boarding facility, but Joe kept me updated and sent pictures which helped ease my mind. My dogs were so happy there that we will 100% go back when we need boarding. Thank you so much Joe for taking such great care of them and laughing at Charlie being a puppy. (Sorry about that!!!!)

I have a Jack Russell Terrier. She lovable but also very active. I haven't had much luck with with any other boarding facilities in SCV. Joe was recommended and doesn't disappoint. He loves dogs! We even received a couple of photos of our dog during the week along with a voicemail letting us know she was having a great time and had a new dog friend. Really put us at ease. She was happy and not stressed when we picked her up. Thanks Joe!

Where do I begin? Our Sheepadoodle began training with Rick around the 5-6 month mark for basic on-leash training, and now having reached the 1 year milestone she has retained the training provided by Rick and continues to excel. Our pups are not just pets, but members of our family. That being said, it was important to us that she had the best, most effective training possible. Rick has done that and graciously provided more. In addition to ensuring our girl had effectively mastered the basics, he extended the learning to us making sure we were equipped with knowledge to continue maintaining the training exercises once back at home. He has been a huge resource in terms of educating us on wellness tips and troubleshooting behavioral quirks as she continues to mature. The facility has beautiful, well-kept, picturesque land allowing your dog plenty of space to run, train, and play. Another note, Rick doesn't take on many dogs at one time, allowing for dedicated attention and training for optimal results. In addition to focused "work/training" time, she had playtime where she was able to continue her socialization. Last, but certainly not least, Rick has cared for our girl as if she was his own, giving us peace of mind that our girl was in great hands.

Joe is number 1 in our dog Lexie's book. All you have to say to her is, "You want to go to Joe's?" And she is booking for the garage door to get in the car. You know the saying," You can't fool dog's and kids.!" Enough said... go to 2nd Home... that is really what it is for your dog. We LOVE Joe!

Our 11 month old chocolate lab, Kona, is a new boy! He was a sweet but over the top full of energy pup who did not listen. We needed Kona to be obedient as he is also an emotional support animal for my husband. Rick Karl loves and lives what he teaches to dogs and their people. He was up for the task and patiently worked with Kona. After 5 weeks with Rick, our boy came home respectful, more calm, and definitely understands commands. We can actually have friends and family over to our home without Kona going bonkers every time, which made it very uncomfortable for all. He listens and obeys commands both on and off leash. Having him be able to hold a 4 minute off leash down stay, heal, sit stay etc with commands, has been a blessing for our family. We love Kona and we love and appreciate Rick, Carol and Xander so much for transforming our boy.
