Altarena Playhouse is the oldest continuously running neighborhood theater in California, presenting live theater in Alameda since 1938. This long-time gem provides a cozy, intimate theater experience in a space steeped in history, originally an abandoned grocery store. Plays are done in the round, with seating encircling the small stage, offering a different view from every angle. It is an incredible intimate theater with a very welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. The venue consistently provides creative, artistically ambitious, and very professional performances at a reasonable price, from re-envisioned classics to new works. The talented crew on and off stage delivers notable, critically-acclaimed productions. The theater has an easy flow for entry, with beverages and cookies available, and the staff is attentive and helpful. It is a sweet, intimate place that fosters a great appreciation for theater arts.
I'm biased, because I sometimes design for this theater, but every play I've seen there was interesting and well produced.
