I’ve taken my car to Engine Works in Alameda a few times, and overall they’ve done a solid job. Their work has held up well, and the technicians clearly know what they are doing. I’ve had a couple of small issues in the past, but nothing serious.
They are definitely on the expensive side, so keep that in mind. The good thing is that they offer strong warranties on the work they do, which helps balance out the higher cost.
Overall, Engine Works is reliable and provides quality service, and you can expect the repairs to be done right.

I'm very impressed. I have handled my own vehicle maintenance for decades. I caused a problem (my fault) with my brake system and gave up trying to diagnose it. Thinking I needed dealer-level service tools, another great shop in town referred me to Engine Works. Eric and his team were able to diagnose and repair a tricky, compound, slightly intermittent problem (that other shops kinda gave up on), within an hour of diagnostics service. Respect. They earned every penny. Very cool that we have facilities like this on the island.

Took my partners 99 Miata to them, it had overheated and blew a head gasket.
They did a great job, sent the engine block out to get machined and put it all back together. In fixing the blow head gasket, they found the likely root cause of the overheating, and fixed that.
Service was fast and thorough, communication was great, they kept me appraised of the progress and status throughout.
And as for the price, it was very reasonable given the scope of the work.

It's been a while, but I came here for repair of my air conditioner on my old 2008 Honda Civic and was charged something like close to $200 to be told that was just the diagnostic charge...Well if I was explained that in the begining I wouldn't have wasted the cash, So as far as I'm concerned they are rip off artist, so go elsewhere.

I take both my cars here. They are fast and historically have finished with the cars at the time that they said they'd finish if not earlier. Also a bunch of great guys there too!

Just moved to the area a few months ago and needed some car repair work done. I needed to get new shocks and they worked to find the best deal possible for me. They also take the time to explain what is going on with you car which is really helpful!

This shop is not endorsed by the Better Business Bureau.Labor charges are $198/hour (more than Tesla's!) and diagnostics and repairs are SLOW.Communication is poor: set an appointment days ahead, drop off at 8, don't expect to hear before closing. It took DAYS to determine that my flooded vehicle was caused by a leaky moon roof, which seems pretty obvious, and DAYS to diagnose and replace an O2 sensor for sluggish performance. Over $2k for each. You are better off getting repairs from the dealership for your particular vehicle.Definitely a male-oriented "good old boy" shop where female customers don't get the same attention as male. More than once I have had to sit and wait to be served, while the desk staff socialized at length about nonrepair matters with male clients or took other calls. My husband used this shop for ages, but I'm done. Very disappointed.
