This was my first visit to Fred's Wrenchouse, and I had a great experience. My repair could have cost more than it did, but they simply did what was necessary to make my car both driveable and aesthetically pleasing and I was on my way a few hours later. This process was made easier because after I dropped my car off in the morning, I was able to go around the corner to Pete's coffee and worked there for 4-4.5 hours on my laptop, and my car was ready to be picked up before 2 PM. Clearly, with all their high ratings here on Yelp, this business doesn't need another one, but I think it's important to keep reviewing so that new customers know they are still doing quality work, in a reasonable amount of time, for a fair market price, and not doing more/charging more if it isn't needed. I had the repair completed the first few days of October 2023, and 6 weeks later it's still feeling solid and my car drives so much more smoothly after the fact.

Very reasonably priced, work came in under estimate. I walked in with a flat tire and they made sure it was fixed by closing time. They even put my spare tire away. I appreciated the help.

Fred did the 125K service on our Ford C-Max. He clearly explained the work and got the word done quickly and smoothly. Angelo

Fred and his crew always know the exact way to figure out what’s happening with my car. I’ve brought in old cars, new cars, and everything in between, and they are always so helpful. They will not jerk you around, they always give you the straight up, honest truth, and they are very reliable.Service: Transmission

Great, trustworthy place. Came in with a "brake system" alert light on thinking something is wrong with my brakes. Fred's team checked and told me that there is nothing wrong with my brakes and that it is a system alert due to a broken sensor which I already knew about and will get fixed at the original dealer's shop.Fred just charged me with a minor fee and off I went. If he had been dishonest, this would have been the perfect occasion to make stuff up and charge me hundreds of dollars, I would have never known. Those guys earned my trust today, and I will go back.

Our 1993 Pontiac Trans Sport would not start. We worried it was the battery or starter. AAA towed the Trans Sport to Fred's. Within a short period of time they had it running, the issue was the ATM Security System no longer worked. They bipassed it, problem solved. Fred's Wrenchouse is our "go to" auto mechanics, they are honest, on-time, and competent.

Brought my van in for its annual road safety check. Fred did it and more, finding cracks in my old timing belt and replacing it. He also let me know I needed a couple new tires, so I brought my van to the tire place I use. Fred and his team are thoughtful and trustworthy. I've been bringing my vehicles to him for around 30 years. The previous place I was taking my car was overpriced and untrustworthy (dealership). Fred is great

I needed a safety check done on my car and I haven't had (or trusted) a mechanic shop in a long time. Happy to say I will continue to go back to Fred's. They have an original feel if you're looking for a sort of old school style, and the way they do electronic reports is super convenient.

I had a maintenance fix on my Subaru Impreza and Fred gave me a quick quote over email and got me in the following week! I appreciate his transparency and fair rate for the work as that's not often the case being a woman and requesting work on my car. Great experience will definitely return the best part is it's walking distance.

Our 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 V10 TRUCK with a 47RE Automatic Transmission needed work done as it was struggling to shift, was overheating with a load uphill, etc.I did lots of research on the Dodge Forums and elsewhere, ultimately deciding I needed an Expert Opinion on the matter and went to Fred's Wrenchouse.Fred's had installed a Cat-Security Shield on our Honda Element, to prevent Catalytic Converter theft, and also had done very good work with a Starter - tricky job - so I felt confident with this Transmission problem. The Transmission was rebuilt for a Heavy-Duty Towing Application, with an External Trans-Oil Cooler, and a Heavy, Billet, Torque Converter and lots of other parts for known issues in the 47RE Transmission.I picked it up after a week or so, and it felt like a New Engine and Trans had been installed; no delays in shifting, smooth and immediate power, and everything worked very well. I haven't towed with it yet, but I expect it will perform very well.Trust is a hard thing to have when an expensive repair is facing you, but I listened to Fred when he told me what was happening and how to fix it right...and I'm glad I did.By fixing the Trans *the right way* we're gaining capability over even a New Truck in terms of what it can pull, at a fraction of the price. New Trucks are Big $$$, too.We also changed the Differential Fluid, had an Exhaust Rattle diagnosed and quieted, a Bumper Alignment fixed and lots of other fixes were performed for free and that just makes it an even better experience. The Trans Rebuild came with a 2 Year / 20,000 Mile Warranty, so...I'm very satisfied. We have a Truck now, that can tow almost anything we throw at it, and with regular maintenance should last well into the 200k - 300k Mileage Range.5 STARS - I highly recommend Fred's Wrenchouse to repair anything, but do trust his advice and you'll do well.Services: Transmission

My family and I have used this business for years and we’ve always had wonderful service. They’ve always been upfront and transparent if any other services needed to be done. They helped me when my car was stolen and they needed to inspect the car when it stolen and found. Once again they helped me through a though time and I can’t thank them enough. If you’re looking for a good mechanic, this is the best place in Alameda.

Fred’s was recommended by my regular shop as “the most skilled with the most integrity” place for doing a full engine replacement. Ended up being exactly the estimate, no last minute surprises, got done in good time. Fred is very likeable in that old school way (which is my way) and my car is now ready for another 5 years of trouble free service (fingers crossed). Having to replace my engine on a relatively low mileage car is nobody’s idea of a good time but Fred’s made it as painless as possible .Service: Engine repair

Fred’s Wrench House was recommended as a place to get a security cable attached to my catalytic converter. Not only do they wrap the cat, they also paint it and carve the VIN # in for a very reasonable price. It was so fast and I’m so happy to have something of a deterrent on my old Honda that’s been targeted twice already! Very nice folks as well.

So my car was fixed for a mysterious leak that said my coolant was low shortly after having been topped off at the local very famous oil changing place. Anyway, Fred was professional and prompt and took time to figure out and fix the problem. My car is running great again. I do recommend.

I've been going to Fred's shop for a little over a year now. And have always been pleased with his work and customer service. He always starts off with, what do I think is wrong. Next he does a safety check, and takes it from there. He lets me know what all he found that was wrong. And I can make arrangements either to get all the work done. Or I split it and only do what I can afford at the time. And come back and do the rest. He doesn't mind explaining everything to me so I understand what and why he's doing it. I'm a great grandmother. And I'm very blessed to have a mechanic like him.Services: General repairs & maintenance
