it's open under new management but the facility is barer, no places to sit between workouts (especially for seniors), rooms are empty, all they've added are ping pong tables. very, Very unimpressive for being under new management

Under new ownership and management. Now 'Alameda Fitness & Spa'. It will be interesting to see if there are any improvements. The gym was so mismanaged by the previous owners who just took money out of it and didn't put much money back into it. I think the original asking price was $13,500,000 but I could be wrong. Per, "The list price for the property is $10,500,000 and the business list price is $3,000,000. The business and the property are to be sold together at $13,500,000." ( How much was 2227 Mariner Square Loop, Alameda sold for? The last sale price for 2227 Mariner Square Loop, Alameda was $7,750,000. When was 2227 Mariner Square Loop, Alameda last sold? 2227 Mariner Square Loop, Alameda was last sold in 1/20/2022.

Mariner Square is a good gym in which to exercise. They have lots of equipment, a swimming pool, and classes with instructors to help with personal work out programs. I would rate MSAC higher, but they seem rather lax in their Covid protocols. People using the aerobic equipment (treadmills, stair climbers, elliptical machines, stationary bikes) are either not wearing masks at all or have them pulled down to their chins. As a result, I no longer shower there after my workouts because of health concerns.

Maybe they have upgraded everything since these reviews, but my experience has so far been great. It's not fancy, but it feels new and definitely clean. I use the pool. It's warm! The sauna is new and clean and very warm. The showers are small individual stalls with a curtain. They are easy to use, have hot water, and are clean. Sometimes, it's the small stuff. In the shower, there's a caddy that's affixed so when you put your shampoo in, it doesn't tilt to one side. The lockers feel brand new. There is a hot tub in the women's locker room, plus one in the pool area. I have only used the pool and locker room, but there are lots of individualized workout rooms so you can get social distance space. Did I mention clean?

Every time I call - there is someone new handling the gym membership and management. With the Covid-19 pandemic, I was charged unnecessary membership fees for months that the gym was not opened or had limited opening. I tried to cancel several times only to get the "run around" and continued monthly membership fees! New management has come on board that doesn't seem to understand or want to understand the dilemma with a long list of excuses that you can't even get a word in edge wise because the manager talks over you - as you try to explain. Terrible customer service. If the manager had been willing to negotiate or listen - I was considering continuing with my gym membership as it is nice to have a local gym here in town. Good luck trying to keep this place open with competent staff.

If there is one thing I know, it's gyms and this gym has it all. Lots of weights to choose from, a couple of squat racks, and plenty of assisted machines to target any muscle group.Plus the staff is super responsive to requests and Vincent, the maintenance guy, is a pleasure to know as he is always friendly to be around. All of the personal trainers are super respectful and kind. This feels more like family to me at this point. For the price, you are getting all your needs met plus a feel of home. A job well done, Mariner!!

Working out at the Mariner Square gym is like working out in a rundown gym from the 70's. It is, however, one of Alameda's largest gyms. PROS: * They offer a free 2-day pass, if you do a tour and ask for it. * They have a pool. * They keep the pool warm at 84 degrees and the hot tubs warm at 104 degrees. * The staff here is very nice. There are some minor exceptions in the "membership department". But the front desk folk are generally pretty good. A couple of them simply look down when you walk in, but most will perk up and say hello. * At any time other than the evening, you can use equipment without much wait due to congestion. * You can rent assigned lockers for $12 per month. CONS: * OMG! The steam sauna is so disgusting. Its smells like old, wet rags. There is mildew on the ceiling, rust on the metal, and mold in the tile. It smells disgusting! * Its cold everywhere. Like really cold. They don't heat the gym so its frigid, especially in the mornings and evenings. Its difficult to keep your muscles loose. Everyone wears hoodies when stretching or lifting. * The machines and all equipment are outdated. Much of the weight room appears to be from the 1970's. For example, the seats on many of the machines are ripped and torn. * The cardio machines are not commercial grade. The treadmills are cheapo; they shake and rock as you run. They aren't on an even floor so be sure to adjust the incline to compensate. One treadmill I set to negative (-2.5) degrees to get the equivalent of (+1.0) degree of positive incline on a nearby machine. The elipicals shake as you use them. * Instead of disposable wipes which is the standard in modern gyms, they place a single nasty reusable towel out for wiping down the equipment. No one really uses it. I'm afraid to touch it. * The floors and carpets are dirty. They don't routinely clean the floors in the exercise areas. They are covered in dirt and grime that people walk in with on their shoes. * The lighting is hilariously poor. Many of the lights in the building are not working. The lens covers on the lights are either missing or cracked. In the locker room there are mirrors but inadequate lights near the mirrors, so shaving is difficult. Its like a surreal Mad Max movie. * Nearly all clocks are wrong in the building. In the men's locker room there are clocks that are 1.5 hours off. Other clocks in the workout areas are either 1 hour off or on-time. So basically the clocks are worthless because you never know which ones are correct. * Many outlets are literally burned out. You can see the fire damage. Also, they strangely lack outlet covers. Do you like charging your phone while working out? Well, most of the outlets are non-operational. The machines have USB ports but most don't actually charge your phone. * In the weight room, many of the mirrors are broken or littered with cracks. They have put tape on many of the cracks, but this is still dangerous. * There is minimal natural light due to the lack of windows. In the cardio area - no windows. In the main area with the strength training machines - no windows. * The instructors for the classes are nice, but remedial. They are basically just members who have stepped up to teach. These are not like the instructors at a normal gym that you admire their physical condition and knowledge - they are more just group leaders. They are more just retired members of the community who lead some exercise. When a class is happening, it actually can be quite difficult to pick out the instructor sometimes. * Men's locker room has no direct connection to the pool. So you walk through the gym in your near nakednes. Also, they have a rule that you must wear shoes. Its so funny watching men walk through the gym wearing nothing but speedos and shoes. * The showers are prison-style open. No privacy in the shower area. * The sinks in the locker-room are those ones they use in schools with kids. You push down the faucets and get 3 seconds of water. It makes shaving so difficult. * There is an older Asian

Not a bad place, but just not great. It's weird to have all the brown carpet in a gym. It just feels old and dirty. The areas I worked out in the most have terrible florescent lighting and no natural light. The classes are geared towards little old ladies. The gym just feels tired and uninspiring. After being a member for years and barely going I finally quit and went to a gym that was a better fit with more energetic classes and overall energy.
