I didn't need any groceries, but I was early for a scheduled massage down the block, so I decided to walk into Safeway to cash out a gift card. It isn't a well-known fact, but in the state of California, customers can cash out gift cards that are under $10. I don't like carrying gift cards in general because I'm worried I will misplace them and be SOL, so when their value is low enough, I try to remember to cash them out.I go to the Customer Service counter and push the button for assistance. After a moment or two, someone comes over asks what I need. I politely let her know I'd like to cash out a gift card. She replies coldly, "we don't do that here." I calmly tell her it's a law in California, but she is not interested in even considering what I have to say. Realizing that I need to get going soon and recognizing she's miscast in customer service and that there's nothing I can say to convince her, I politely ask to speak to someone else. She says I can talk to her manager, Brad, and I thank her for this opportunity. Perhaps assuming I will back off once I realize a manager is coming, she is incredulous that I actually want to see him. She rudely insists that he's going to tell me the same thing, and I let her know I'd still like to speak to Brad.Brad, thankfully, is both more knowledgeable about the law and, unlike his employee, is not a ridiculously unpleasant person. He helps me immediately and I go on my way.I can't imagine having to work with such a miserable human being, but what baffles me is that this employee was so nasty. Even if I had been mistaken about the law, she could have handled herself a thousand different ways that would have been better. Maybe she has some special skill that makes Safeway keep her around, but God knows why she is allowed to speak to customers. This experience merited the lowest possible rating. Only Brad's handling of it in the end bumps it up to two stars.

Update: the hours on Yelp have been updated to match the actual store hours. Super helpful! Thank you!

I try not to be a 1 star reviewer, because... because. But, the people need to be warned. This store is gross. It's small, but oddly, quite a bit of parking. Product inventory is super limited. Prices are high. The place is just dirty. 2 of my items were already opened when i went to pay for it. One highlight: the lady bagging my groceries was an absolute delight and seemingly made this dreary place a bit brighter.Overall, so glad this is NOT my local grocery store, because if it was, I'd just move.

I live nearby and have been going here for almost 12 years now. It's gotten worse as the years go by. The worst grocery store I have ever gone too. Horrible management, customer service, expired goods, dishonorable with return policies, and dirty. Plus, their security guards do not help keeping the theft and crime down. I have been pushed aside as people steal items and walk out the front door. Too many homeless people, most of them very aggressive and some violent, frequent the store. Not a safe place needless to say. Stay away from this Safeway

I took a chance and found out this place cannot be dependent on. Never 24 hours and never open when I arrive past 2 AM. It's well lit, but it makes no difference.

Don't count on this store to be open 24 hrs - it isn't. Safeway website, app & Google search all say it is - it ain't.You'll be greeted by an unwelcoming black residential door.Even the door sign says 24 hrs.At least a half dozen other unhappy customers walked up to the locked door in the short time I was parked. With a mile long list of earned horrible reviews, you'd think the powers-that-be would actually care about customers and do something about this store. This is my last trip to this store.

We were visiting from out of state and my daughter spiked a fever in the middle of the night. I came to this Safeway at 3:53 AM to get some Tylenol and it was closed but Google, Yelp and the front entrance shows that they're supposed to be 24hrs. After reading previous comments it looks like this has been an ongoing issue with this Safeway.

This store is super creepy especially the staff. I am still traumatized after my experience this past weekend. The very weird male clerk shoved my groceries as hard as he could. I could feel this man's energy it felt like YOU DON'T BELONG HERE. I thought I was tripping but right when he began ringing in the next customer he turned into some Leave it to Beaver character : / I will only go to this location if I absolutely have to. Hurry and install self check out stands!

After having ankle surgery and unable to ambulate and bear weight for several weeks, I decided to utilize Safeway online delivery service. The first order belonged to someone else. Had to replace and wait an additional day to receive my order due to their error. I decided to give them another chance and place another order on 11/28/22 for some cold pressed juice that serves as healing for pain. I place the order 4 eight bottles of juice and specifically declined substituting the items for alternatives. Well, low and behold.... they substituted my item and experienced an allergic reaction because the substituted items had totally different ingredients. When i called the customer service number at 877-505-4040 and spoke to Shannon, she was the rudest and most argumentative person ever..... I explained over and over that I had never opted for substitutions and she treated me like i was lying to her. She refused to provide a refund and told me I "need to bring items back to store". even though I repeatedly informed her that I had ankle surgery and couldn't ambulate. No apology, empathy, or compassion for others. I also requested that she have a manager call me back and two days later- no call. I called back on 12/1/22 and spoke with Delphia. Although he was somewhat pleasant, he was condescending and in a covert manner insinuated that I made an error in my selection. He informed me that I' will give you a one-time refund this time, but next time call us before you place your order to ensure their website reflects accurate order information. When I walked him through the online screen, I pointed out that the substitution option was never selected. He went on to say: you have to select several options to avoid substitution of items. Does one have to take an online tutorial to order from "Safeway"? No accountability for defects in their system. This was a horrible experience and I will use "Sprouts" as my go to store in the future.

I shop here often and had never had a problem. I went here the day before thanksgiving and I set my things down and the cashier started to ring my stuff up with the person in front of me stuff I said nicely that is mine and she said well you seen me pick it up you should of said something. I've never been disrespected like that ever in a place of business. I know people that work there and they have always been super nice. I will not be going back that is for certain. They need to train staff to not be rude

All of the reviews about how terrible this location is has turned out to be pretty accurate, unfortunately. And my latest incident was truly egregious. While checking out, I noticed that my Safeway offer on my card did not load when the cashier rang me up. After I pointed it out, a lady who I'm guessing was the manager on duty quickly came over and immediately asked me if someone in my family or I had already redeemed the offer. Implying that I was trying to redeem the same offer twice. I told her noone redeemed the offer, and I asked the cashier if I could try entering my phone number again. The cashier obliged, and voided the transaction and re-processed it, and unfortunately the offer still would not show up. I showed the manager my Safeway app, clearly reflecting the offer still on my account. She quickly stated that I obviously entered my own phone number wrong (twice at this point), snatched my phone out of my hand, scrolled through my app, and pulled up the account settings. At which point, she showed me my screen, stating "THAT is the correct phone # to use!" (as if I don't know my own #). We decided to try the transaction again a 3rd time, and on this 3rd attempt, the register finally registered the offer. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging some sort of system delay/failure, the manager decided to double down on blaming me and asked: "did you JUST scan it?!?!" My puzzled response was: "Scan what?!?!" Manager: "The offer! You need at least 15mins after you click into it!" I let her know that I actually added the offer in the morning (a good 9hrs+ ago). And promptly grabbed my item, receipt, and walked out. As I had about enough of this rude engagement at this point and did not need to waste anymore of my time getting insulted. Horrendous customer service aside, this is also a smaller Safeway with no bakery, no self-checkout, and had only 1 register open when I got in line. Save yourself the headache of shopping at this location and just head to the El Cerrito location on San Pablo.

They do have some good items, but the customer service is poor. I went in today, wanting to go to the pharmacy. The wait was too long (not sure why, just one person in line), so I decided to come another time. I picked up one grocery item to buy. I asked at the deli if they would ring me up but they refused. I then get in the "express" line - it took at least 10 minutes. So, all in all, about 15 minutes to buy just one item. I tried calling to speak to a manager but reached no one.

This is a comment about Safeway in general and not about this particular store: I almost always bring my own shopping bags but today I forgot. I asked for paper bags, and the checker told me they only have plastic. Only plastic? I'm am so shocked, with all we know about the environmental damage of plastic, Safeway can't even provide a paper option? I will never set foot in another Safeway as long as I live. Given their presence in California, a state that is burning up due to climate shifts, I'm appalled at their practices.

We came to this Safeway because it's supposed to be open 24/7 but when we got there the lady said they were closed. What??!! When we questioned her she said she had no staff and needed to close. I understand that, it's not her fault people didn't show up to work, but COME ON, Safeway! :(
