American Tech is my neighborhood computer repair store and has been a great neighbor for many years. Not only does Sam, the proprietor, repair computers, I have also been able to buy used computers there over the years. I've never had a bad experience from this shop. American Tech, Berkeley is honest, reliable, friendly, and very affordable.

Sam was great, I called him with a problem I was having with my email and he went right to work on it when I arrived. He resolved it in a little more than half an hour and charged me $69. My friend told me he's gotten her out of a number of pickles and he did it for me too.

We are going with Four Stars because although there were a lot of things I could write to the contrary, I want to focus on the positives, while still maintaining a productive insightful review. Also, this review was meant for last year. I took my broken MacbookPro screen in for replacement in early November 2019 but had to call, on my own, to check the status after a full month of no word from American Tech Inc., it seemed as though my laptop was on the back burner and they probably had a lot of other projects ahead of mine, which makes sense with such a small operation...I am assuming and thinking they might also only have two employees....tops...so there's that. I obviously wanted to have my laptop back asap and needed it, since I had been using my work computer which has many limitations because its a company computer. But so, I called them and once I pointed out the amount of time which had elapsed since I had dropped off my laptop, they seemed quick to get the project started but also confused as to how much time had passed...without me calling? As if that was my sole responsibility? I didn't want to be a difficult customer, especially as this was my first time as patron to them....but a whole month without a status update for a broken screen? But here is the kicker, once they finally started work and after a month, aaand after I had called them out on the time elapsed...they called me to tell me that screen I needed to replace was actually going to be $250 more than what I was originally quoted...."ok it's a Mac...that makes sense...i guess..but this should have been a call that was made early on?" was my thought and what I told them. I was upset by the new price but mostly by the amount of time it took to notify me. But I recognize this is a local business so I said you know what, how about this? You refund me and I take my money else where? Right? I mean I won't write a negative review or anything like that, just refund me and we can both move one. What I appreciated about Sam was his ability to recognize that they were in the wrong here, and mind you I was being very accommodating, after bartering with them I thought you know what lets just cut our loses. Sam found a cheaper Mac screen replacement, that was used, and was able to pay the difference...mostly because of the amount of time I had already waited. It might have taken upwards of a month to finally get my computer back but I did.....it was eventually stolen from my parked car in Golden Gate park, but I still appreciate that I was able to get it fixed and American Tech does have their heart in the right place. If you're looking for a more reasonable and personal experience, go here, but also bear in mind they are a smaller operation so you, as a consumer/customer, will need to practice patience but in the end it's worth it.

It’s a bit of a risk paying for this service. They’ll just do what is most likely to fix the problem even if it’s not a guarantee and still charge you.

Front desk person was super nice. But that was about it. Whoever is doing the actual diagnosis was simply not competent enough to recognize the real issue of my laptop, which was just a loose cable. Wanted to charge 170(on top of the flat rate of 69 plus 30 dollars for priority) for a whole replacement of pretty much everything. So I took my laptop to another repair shop instead(don't wanna say the name but it's only like a block away) and they fixed it in less than 4 hours and only charged 120 bucks. So I basically wasted 2 days and 40 dollars here when I could've walked an extra block to the next repair shop and got it fixed right away. Wouldn't recommend. The two stars I gave was solely for the front desk person otherwise I would've just given zero stars.
