I chose to visit Funky Door for my Pilates needs, bypassing a nearby franchise alternative. The classes there contributed positively to my physical and mental fitness objectives. As I am already a member of another gym and only practice Pilates monthly, I preferred buying class passes on an as-needed basis for greater flexibility. Initially, everything went smoothly; I would attend classes every few weeks without any issues. However, when my credits started dwindling and I wished to purchase a five-class pass, I was informed that this option was unavailable. While even CorePower offers such a package, my main concern was not the lack of this offering but rather the manner in which the staff, particularly an individual named RT, communicated this to me. RT's aggressive and passive-aggressive demeanor made me feel so uneasy that I resolved never to return. I didn't protest; I simply left, reflecting on the irony of a business that claims to be community-focused and small-scale yet lacks in flexibility and customer service. Consequently, I've decided to fulfill my Pilates requirements with franchised competitors. Despite the quality of the classes at Funky Door, their rigidity and poor customer service were significant drawbacks. For those who prioritize flexibility and customer service less, Funky Door might still be a viable option.

This is initials M.S writing this review, if it's in need to look up for reference for accuracy. I'm only remaining private by using my parent's email account, not my direct contact one in hopes of feeling safe after posting this review. I want to feel comfortable writing and posting this honest, and factual review. I will never forgot what had happened to me on the month of June 2023. I was a member of Funky door yoga for many years, I had zero issues with the previous owners, and spent over at least starting 3k + total in membership fees, and for many months I never even attended to any classes. For many years, I rarely stayed for savasana in any of the classes due to the women's locker being usually overcrowded. The women’s locker room, only having 3 shower rooms, and it's challenging to even to make space for yourself to change your clothes after when you shower. Due to people checking in and leaving it’s a mess. So, I usually leave 5 mins or earlier, and it has never been an issue. Or even if I arrived late, I know certain pose it's okay to still drop in. Again, I had zero issues with previous owners and even the new instructors that is still teaching at Funky door yoga.My reason for posting this review is to all young women beware of taking Jeff R. (Owner) classes. I attended his class twice in the year of 2023. The second class I took of him, made me decide to cancel my membership. It was when I attended his class on July 2023 during my experience in Jeff class it left me thinking that his behavior towards me was very condescending, discriminating, and even assaultive. I did not give him any permission to touch me, nor in anyway expected him to stop me, and grab me by my arm while I was planning to leave his class. On the month of July 2023 during one of Jeff R class I have taken, I decided not to stay in Savanna as usual for many years. I was already standing up and getting ready to take off. Jeff R stopped me and grabbed my arm or asked me ‘Where are you going? You came to my class late and are now leaving early, stay until the end of class!’ I was startled and stayed. I canceled my membership and decided never to return. The cancellation process is a headache, and I feel exactly how the other customer posted reviews from Josh K. about the cancellation policy. Also expect to pay another month even if you cancel during mid of the month. It's none of his business if I choose to leave the class early and never been an issue with other instructors and past instructors, and fact that the Women's restroom only has 3 showers, and usually crowded and no space to get out when it's time for you to want to change or get out to the door. how do you expect us to leave in a timely manner and usually there is a long wait for the women showers after class is over.

Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just starting your journey, this place will undoubtedly become your go-to hot yoga spot in Berkeley.

When I first walked into Funky Door Yoga for a Bikram60 class on a cold and ugly January (2023) afternoon, I wasn’t fully aware of what I was getting myself into. It’s not that I was new to Bikram, but 3 out of the 4 times that I’ve tried, it ended poorly for me and discouraged me from doing it again. But this time, it was different. I saw more positives than the negatives. I was safe. I was being observed by a professional. I wasn’t going to get sick. I wasn’t pressured into doing something I didn’t want to do. I could work at my own pace and level. Despite the 100+ degree heat, it was comfortable. It was… pleasant, for once. And since then, I have been funky ever since. Attending classes 2-3x a week, sometimes 4-5x a week. Taking all classes whenever I can, from Ry's Hot Pilates to Jeff's Ivengar to Lynn's Bikram… whenever I had time to make the drive to Berkeley from Castro Valley, I’d take advantage of it and come to Funky Door. It has really helped me heal through my sudden personal leave from work and improved my general physical and mental health as well.Would highly recommend. Bring a friend, too!

I’ve been going to Funky Door for a minute now, and it’s hands down the best hot yoga in the east bay. Ry, Jeff, Jocelyn, and other instructors are fun, and the mixtape classes are a good time. Strong rec if you like to stretch and do Pilates in heat. Also, the vibe and art is funky, not the rooms. They’re clean and smell nice. lol ?

I went to Funky Door and signed up for a month of unlimited hot yoga. I rented one of their mats and towels and did my first class. 24 hours after my class I woke up with pink eye in both eyes. 48 hours after I came down with a cold.I work from home and hadn't gone out much that week. I have only had pink eye one other time in my life - fifteen years ago when I went to a music festival. Not surprisingly, I haven't had it since my experience at funky door. I know I got it at their studio from a mat that was not sufficiently cleaned.I called the studio and informed them of the situation. I was trying to be nice, or at least not upset, on the phone. I offered to pay for the class I took but said I would like a refund on the rest of the $200 payment for the month. The person on the phone was not helpful and said, "why don't you want to come back?" after I told them I had to get antibiotics for a double eye infection. It was wild. They said they wouldn't do a refund on the phone and that I needed to send an email which I did. The person who responded to my email a week later was also trying to convince me to stay. It's crazy, I wasn't planning on writing a nasty review on yelp, I just wanted my money back and to call it a day. I again offered to pay for the class I took, just asking to be refunded the difference. After several emails asking them to refund me they just stopped responding. Funky door gets one star. I'll never go there again.

I absolutely love getting my funk on at Funky Door! Especially now that they have added hot pilates. Funky Door has such a great community, it's so uplifting and supportive. Can't wait to try out the new studio on Polk in SF. Try one of Ryan's yoga classes or Carl's hot pilates!

I feel fortunate to have funky door studio close to where I live. I have been looking for a yoga place that will push me to my limits. I'm totally exhausted and also re-energized after every class. Funky door has a variety of classes to improve strength and flexibility. I love the hot Pilates and Yoga with MixTapes. Also, the the staff here is incredible. Everyone is very welcoming and I don't know how they do it but they remember everyone's name. It feels I'm part of a community. I have never been this loyal to any other yoga studio as I'm to this one.

Love this place, the dedicated and intuitive instructors and the community. Haven for wellness. The more I do it the better I know myself. As the saying goes, the yoga doesn't change but you do. I am so very glad we have this treasure in our fair city.

Big, welcoming practice space, with ample parking. Tried out the 90-minute Bikram and it was a lot of fun, and at times challenging. Kind receptionists, very clean, and energetic practitioners. Looking forward to trying a class with music.

FUNKY DOOR IS THE BEST!! The staff are so friendly and helpful and the teachers are great. There is a great sense of community as well. Coming here was my first time doing bikram and there is no pressure to push through or be perfect and they encourage you to listen to your body and do what is best for you, while also challenging your skill sets and mindset. The studio is so warm (hah!) and welcoming, and filled with fun art and funky records. Funky door is the place to be.
