She is always very nice and fast! I go on lunch for polish or nail repair and she gets it done.

JV Nails is an absolute gem. I've tried countless nail salons in the East Bay over the years, and this is the best. Nhung is wonderful- patient, meticulous, and kind. My gel manicure always lasts super long with no chipping- and I'm hard on my hands. Spending time with her adorable dog Mango is an added bonus!

I've had two wonderful pedicures at JV Nails this year! Nhung's treatment was very relaxing, and my toes look clean and tidy, with a natural gel finish per my request. Reasonably priced too. Highly recommended!

My last review was in 2012, when I happily gave JV Nails 5 stars. As such, it pains me to write this because I loved the previous owners, and the owners before them, but after serving as a loyal customer for 10+ years, I fear my tenure might be over. When I first visited this place, under new management, it was in June. The new owner was kind, focused and thorough. Though the price markup was noticeable, I left generally happy with my experience, (included in that was her shared love of dogs + treats for my four-legged friend). Today, I was in the neighborhood today and thought I'd stop back in for another visit. My needs? Gel removal, basic manicure, no polish. Pros: Easy to get an appointment Dog-friendly Cons: Painful and painfully long process to remove gel polish (the newish technician did not make any attempt to file the polish off; she went straight for the Dremel and there were several moments my nails started burning. Despite this, she persisted, and my nails were so tender for the two days that followed). Disconnect in communication - I kept asking for round edges yet I kept getting sharp pointy edges. Each nail had to be refilled 1-2 times, and even then, they were so sloppy and uneven Timing - I have gotten gel for years. Never has it taken that long for such a simple and routine ask. This visit took over an hour, and that's only because I asked the owner to step in and speed things along. Which leads me to blame - when I mentioned everything was taking a long time, and also that my nails both a) still had polish and b) were not smooth, I was told it was just a mistake with my eyes and everything was fine. Net, $30 later, I walked out w nails that needed some TLC at home - specifically edges refilled, nail beds buffed because they were so rough, and a frustration I very seldom feel wrt to nail salons. My greatest sadness is that for years this place served its customers w kindness, professionalism and affordable pricing. Today, I experienced a fraction of that. I am a big fan of supporting local/small businesses and genuinely hope this review serves as a learning opportunity for new management.

I got a cute ombré design for $70 done completely with dip powder, tips, and gel topcoat. The technician also used the glitter that I brought in, which was a plus. For Berkeley, the pricing is fine. That said, I really had a problem with how rough the technician was with my nails. She was quite dismissive too. On top of that, she didn't use an individual file for me (this is unsanitary!) and it hurt a lot. It just seemed like she wanted to be done with my nails and that felt quite bad. I wouldn't recommend this spot seeing as I ended up walking away with pain in my nail beds and an infection on my pinky...

Worst manicure I've ever gotten. Hard to even call it a manicure. The woman who did my nails clearly was not a regular nail tech - she barely knew how to file let alone paint. She put on so much paint and base & top coat that the paint has literally all completely just chipped off, after less than 3 days. These photos are 12 hours after the manicure. Not cool that I was charged the regular full price for someone who clearly was not a regular nail technician.

I was visiting Berkeley (from the North Bay) on Sunday & had a little time so decided to give a salon other than my home base a try. JV came up in my search as nearby and 4 stars on average. Price is right ($30 for a gel mani which is unheard of where I live!) and the end result was decent (although there's a weird film on a couple of my nails that doesn't wash off?). However...the place was not clean, in fact that might be too kind. The equipment they were using didn't appear to be sterilized - I can only hope the towels were at least washed but I'm not convinced. Worst part, honestly, I didn't notice until she had already started - the woman not only didn't look like she took care of her own nails (jagged & uneven), but worse was they were dirty. Like really dirty. Like I was nervous from that point on and as she used her dirty nails to scrape under my nails I felt a little sick and when she was rubbing lotion on I started to wonder if I have OCD because I think I started sweating a little. The other younger woman was working on another customer's acrylics and was so rude to the client I didn't understand why she didn't get up and leave. Maybe the same reason I didn't - once you've started, you can't leave with 1/2 done nails. The icing on top was they are one of the few businesses that only take cash - there's a small sign inside (not on the door) so I didn't realize until 1/2 way through so had to wander out afterwards to find an ATM (there's one in a sketchy "smoke shop" 2 doors down that charges $2.99 in fees if you're ever looking). Not sure why Yelp shows above that they accept credit cards - not the case. Had this been the best manicure/experience of my life I wouldn't even mention the cash thing (although it would still be annoying), but it wasn't so I am. Moral of the story for me: you get what you pay for and if you get it right at home, stick with that. Yuck.
