This is one of my go-to markets in Berkeley. The food, pastries, and little gifts you can pick up here is just wonderful. They have this cardamom rice pudding that is slightly and perfectly sweet! They have baked goods that have straight up ingredients and the hot food section constantly changes daily. Plus, it's just a great place to get good food and eat outside, sitting on one of their tables while you people watch.

Imo; Got food poisoning from their deli imo. I saw an employee, putting the bottom end of the old deli dish, straight into the food of the new dish! Totally against health code rules. I mentioned that to the manager, who didn't even speak to the offender! Treated me as if I was the offender for mentioning this, as it could give people food poisoning. Didn't eat anything else. Over priced, rude and angry manager, crowded, long wait for any food, customers coughing without masks, employees not wearing gloves or masks, and each time they refill the food, see above! etc. Not worth it period. Lots of other places who won't treat you badly. Sardines from Italy selling for $14.95 you can get online for $7.50! Fish from the fish place there, was also horrific and stale. Also a homeless guy, filthy, stealing things from the veg. market, and I pointed that out to the cashier, and they didn't even talk to him, covered in dirt, pants down, did I say filthy, touching the food you are going to buy. Gave me a blank look. Lots of other people saying how rude the manager and cashiers are other than me. Bad actors imo

I am à big Market Hall food and usually visit the one located on college avenue. I visited this one while shopping on 4th and was highly disappointed. I got lunch and the food was bland and dry. I went back in to purchase another drink because of it and that's when I decided I would leave a review. I purchased a $1.50 drink that no one helped me find. The cashier gave me back a pennie that I was ready to drop in the tip jar when I realized how stupid it was my hand changed direction and I went through my wallet to find a tip and the cashier who apparently can't read situation suddenly got a horrible attitude towards me, I left without leaving any tips. 1. Since when do we have to tip our cashiers ? We are in CA, the minimum wage is $15 and while I agree that it's not a lot, a teacher with a Master degree earn barely a few $ more. 2. No one helped me in the store, I purchased a $1.50 drink that took 1 minute of your time and you are giving me an attitude because I didn't leave you 1 pennie ?! When I clearly was looking for a better tip. Your loss, clearly. Will not visit ever again.

There is no more cut cheese. It's all prepackaged run of the mill stuff. The person standing behind the counter has no experience. Can't bode well for the future of this wonderful little store. The wine store in the corner is closed now too. My guess is the rents have been raised and their going to redevelop this property.

We had everything from pastries to sandwiches, and it was all excellent. I had a chocolate croissant and my daughter had an apple pastry. We also ordered a falafel sandwich and a chicken sandwich. All great.

Today, Oct 18, 2023, at 1:00 pm I found a fly in their soup. One employee said “ it must have been from the refrigerator’.” They refunded my money. My wife however had finished hers. And the employee behind (wearing cap and apron today) the bread place was very rude. She said to me: “you have for your turn,” well I didn’t know there was line- just did not how to communicate. I felt insulted. The rest of the employees were nice. We go there quite often but we will try others now

During a visit to Fourth Street in Berkeley, stopped at this place to grab a sandwich. Usually, I would go to Pollara but they have unfortunately closed shop. I have known about and been to Market Hall in distant past, but never noticed until today how AMAZING this place smells. The smell is absolutely delicious and made me wonder where is the source because I want to eat whatever it is. I will definitley re-visit this place to explore more of their specialty European foods and other items. Associates working were friendly. Parking could be challenge if during prime time hours on the weekend. However, I usually find a spot somewhere close by to the main shopping area.

So many temptations here! Even when I come with one thing in mind (to restock my Mariage Freres tea), I have to linger and see what else is in stock. The deli section is amazing and the sandwiches are first rate. I love the biscuits and the chocolate eclairs, check out the bakery to see what your favorites be. The pasta offerings are also wonderful!

This is one of my favorite places to buy specialty items. It's definitely worth stopping in and a short walk from the Berkeley Amtrak station. The Oakland store is equally stocked. I've been pleased with their selection of tea, ready foods, gourmet snacks, pasta, honey and more. Everything I've purchased has been absolutely delicious and worth experiencing. The service is fine and there's a comfortable enough sitting area outside of the Berkeley location (a collection of small tables and chairs).

I purchased Hot Italian Sausages and neglected to look at the ingredients. When I started to cook them I noticed a displeasing odor. Read the label and realized they put 4 spice (includes ginger and cloves) in tje Hot Italian Saisages. It ruined my entire batch of pasta. I can’t figure out why they would add those spices, it was just awful and it was an expensive mistake.

Food here is decent though very expensive especially compared to the stellar selection at the nearby Berkeley bowl. But mostly, asking for and defaulting to a tip at a gourmet grocery checkout is wild and leaves a sour taste
