It's a great facility with great staff. Why are you reading Google reviews for a synchrotron? Why are there Google reviews for a synchrotron?

Excellent site for doing research. Googles street view tour is also nice. Trainings and bagging are required to gain access. Go to Blackberry Gate when arriving to get your badge.

The Advanced Light Source is a very cool place. I came here and used beamline 12.3.2 as part of my graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. A user's experience can vary a lot depending on the beamline used and the scientists in charge of the beamline. I lucked out and had a good beamline and scientists in charge that were helpful and friendly when I had beam time. For those nervous about radiation levels, radiation training was required before starting work here so one had some idea of what radiation levels were and what levels were not harmful to health. The employees that helped with getting checked in and getting a permanent security badge were helpful, though the process for badge renewal did change. Temporary badges/bus passes were obtained with advance notice of coming up to the facility and were needed for acquiring my permanent badge. The Advanced Light Source houses a synchrotron and the building retains a circular architectural footprint. Offices and a lounge area to sit and eat food are located off of the main ring containing the beamlines. Small kitchens and eating areas are speckled along the outside of the ring as well, they were typically shared between beamlines. Beam quality was high though occasionally it would shut off randomly, a beam down status. I found this to not be much of a problem, as I stayed at the beamline as much as I could when I had beam time. For those who had to restart operations on a beamline during their session because of a beam down status, the beam being down was more frustrating. All around I give this place ten out of five stars. The different beamlines and diversity of research being conducted here was reminiscent of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory only for science not candy. But oh science can be candy at times.

Well not accessible to everyone but this is a place where people is trying to make our life better, where scientists are trying to understand how are cells works by understanding how proteins are made.

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a specialized particle accelerator that generates bright beams of x-ray light for scientific research. Electron bunches travel at nearly the speed of light in a circular path, emitting ultraviolet and x-ray light in the process. The light is directed through about 40 beamlines to numerous experimental endstations, where scientists from around the world (“users”) can conduct research in a wide variety of fields, including materials science, biology, chemistry, physics, and the environmental sciences. Operation of the ALS is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences.
