Went in the bar for the advertised happy hour. We were told that we had to set up at the bar to do happy hour because the rest of the tables in the bar were for dinner guests. It's pretty obvious that Captains Anchorage is now catering to tourists and is not welcoming the locals business. ***In reply to your reply. The very fact that you stated that you allowed us to be seated at a table is a clue that you have definitely changed your policy making us very uncomfortable from the very beginning. I guess in the 20 years we have been coming to the Anchorage we have always been allowed to come in the bar and set wherever we desired. Now the first thing we are ask on entering is ( do you have reservations? ),when we ask why the sudden change to your strick policy,we we told (oh were so busy we have to seat people in the bar for dinner). This is ridiculous when you have the whole upstairs for dinners. My take on this is your happy hour advertisement is just a draw to get people in and when your small bar is full(maybe 10 stools)patrions are forced to have dinner. Instead of a welcoming place captains has become a stuffy,rules and regulations establishment catering to tourists. We may come back for special occasions, but after this we are very uncomfortable just popping in for a cocktail and bite. It certainly isn't the Captains Anchorage it used to be. Sorry to say.

Everything was excellent. The salad was fresh. The lobster tail was delicious. Sean waited on us and as usual very nice service. Sadly we went in on Wednesday. Loraine is in on Thursday so we will be back to say hi.

I have dined there a few times living here permanently the last 3 years. The owner is very welcoming and sweet... she really treasures her restaurant. Tonight however, the waitress was very kind. I was never asked for fresh cracked pepper on my salad, only when my dinner was served 4 my potato. Potato was Luke warm. Condiments were served later 4 Potato after my husband put horseradish on his Potato not knowing. Ordered glass of wine never being told I could order a whole bottle for cheaper than 2 glasses and allowed to take unfinished bottle home. Was not expecting this service as I have not in the past. The manager came and asked how dinner was with our waitress at next table. We felt trapped n didn't want to hurt anyone's feeling.... was bs Ohhhh, we were never offered dessert but the table next to us was. We didn't know they had dessert since not offered or in menu.

Admittedly we found this place on a list as a gift certificate. we didn't make reservations & we're fortunate on a weekday they were able to take our party of 7. The ambiance was cozy cabin & lended to description of casual fine dining. The server, I believe named Shaun was spot on service & his recommendations. He stated he has been there over 25 years and he named many others working there had a long length of service (that says something) All of our food came out as ordered everything tasted amazing and fresh. Their salad dressings are homemade and tasted great. I had blackened sea bass & our daughter's pork chop & clam chowder was amazing. I was too full to try any other dishes. Would definitely recommend and go back if we visit in the future

Great service and great food! Best restaurant in Big Bear! It has alot of history, Big Bear history, and haunted history. Sit at the bar and meet Lorraine, she's been bartending at the restaurant since 1977 or 78! I love the captains anchorage!

Wrote a honest review of my experience and was contacted by management. Which said please send us your information and we will send you something so you can come back and give us another try. Sent my information because I figured why not try them again maybe the night we went in was just a busy mistake. Nothing came about convinced that this business only contacts to look proactive but truly are not. I thought I had posted this a while back but saw it under my drafts.

If you gave me a hundred years, I couldn't design a more quintessential Big Bear destination. Come for the steaks and seafood, stay for the family level of service. No trip to Big Bear is complete without a stop by Captains Anchorage. We're their Chowder Children.

This is the place to go in Big Bear if you want to experience the vibiest steak place on the mountain. The interior is pitch perfect with original furnishings, fireplaces, and photos of Andy Devine (the original owner and actor). The bar has a big fireplace and the booths are cozy and private. The service was, well, it's what service should be everywhere. Attentive, prompt, and incredibly friendly. It's the kind of place where the current owner will talk to you and make you feel special. The food was great too. Big Bear seems to be high on mediocre, overpriced restaurants. This was not that place. Bread, clam chowder, salads all great. Cheese curds, they're delicious; crunchy, salty and cheesy. NY Strip was very good. Others in the party had the prime rib, great; and fish, very tasty. I will return and hang in the bar by the fireplace.

The food is overpriced and mediocre. The atmosphere is loud and there isn't anything appealing about the ambiance. The service was ok. The waitress was so busy and running from table to table that she really couldn't have found a minute to get us another drink. I think it's overrate. Oh!!! And for $160 a pound of crab, it should t be fishy, but it was

Parking is plenty outside. The interior lighting is dim and cozy. We ordered PrimeRibs , Chilean Seabass ( a bit pricey and thin) , and apple wood bacon candy. Service is efficient, food is good especially the Sourbread with butter, and Prime Ribs. .

This restaurant has such a rich history. It is nestled in among the pine trees, and the structure itself has weathered log siding. Once you step inside you feel like you are stepping back in time into the old west. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious.
