EXTREME hostile work environment. mid-level management in nearly all departments plays favorites with some employees and unnecessarily harass and intimidate less favored employees, especially in education creating hostile and fearful work environment. GIA laid off / let go of approximately 1200 employees last year and mid level management has the remaining employees turning against each other because of fear of getting let go. management is using this fear to unnecessarily and illegally leverage and intimidate the employees that are less favored, thereby creating a hostile work environment. As a longtime retail jewelry dealer i have gotten to know several dozen employees in different departments and they all pretty much say the same thing. THINK twice about seeking employment here. For those of my friends suffering in this hostile work environment, I recommend you collectively retain a high level employee law / workplace harassment attorney, like Laura Farris in Carlsbad. I also recommend you go to social media and expose the type of treatment you are being subject to. As for the mid-level and high level management? The public will find out about you...you will be outed on social media. SHAME on you GIA.

Sent 2 Rings for authentication, they lost one after being in their possession for 4 days! I was told to seek insurance but usps will not pay for theft after delivery. There is no evidence of any tampered package per usps. Postal inspector mentioned this is becoming common with this location. I searched on Google and found on reddit an ebay community forums lots of similar issues. They will steal from you and there is no recourse! Tampered packages are labeled so on tracking with a red label also on the box. Per the inspectors there were no issues with my package and it was marked delivered to individual at this GIA location. Police, FBI, ic3, and usps Postal criminal investigation unit were notified. Case is ongoing. Will be pursuing this with all my being. Hopefully this is a warning to others.

I was sold a lab diamond and when I was getting it appraised for insurance purposes, I was told that it was a lab diamond but that it would be best to send to the lab to get a report. I created an account online, sent it via USPS, insured it and in about 2 weeks I had the diamond back and a report. GIA confirmed it was a CVD lab diamond.

The school itself is interesting but the curriculum severely outdated despite attempts to modernize. Poor leadership, I’d say from experience. Some teachers are excellent but others and most of the administrators have a major attitude problem and superiority complex. I’ve also had stones graded here that I believe were altered in their reporting to accommodate the diamond dealer who sent them in. I think maybe it’s not as squeaky clean as they’d like to admit and seems most of the graders are underpaid and overworked so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were making side deals.

Museum not open to the public. It did not state this in the website. They said that you can only go in right now if you're dropping off diamonds.

Sent in a 16.67ct tourmaline gem in for identification and report and received the gem back damaged with scratches across the table. Reached out to GIA and got a hold of Nathan, he said it was due to poor polishing and the scratches were just not noticed by us. Poor handling could not have cause this because of the hardness of the gem. He did not handle the gem personally but decided this through the pictures I sent in. Before sending in your items in take pictures, I did not and I am left with a damaged gem.

I felt the need to write a review of GIA after attending another jewelry school (New Approach School for Jewelers) that was an absolute nightmare. You can see my review of them over there. I graduated from the CAD/CAM program at GIA in 2019 and it was excellent. Everyone was absolutely professional in every way, from the administration to the instructors, who were extremely knowledgeable and talented, to literally everyone, even the cafeteria employees were great to interact with. The only reason I decided to do the bench jewelers course (hands on fabrication skills) at another school is because it was a 3 month program and not 6 months, which it is at GIA. GIA - please make a 3 month condensed intensive bench jewelers program! It's hard for a lot of people to find 6 whole months of time off work and earning income to do something like that but there's a real demand for it. People come from all over the world to go to GIA's Carlsbad campus and it's absolutely justified. Excellent school, amazing campus, stunning location. If I had all the time in the world I would do all their programs there. True excellence. A serious school but also so much fun.

Great staff and security. Their display of various gems is educational and amazing. This is a bucket list place if you know or care to know anything about precious and semi precious stones.
