Our favorite booth at the Aptos Farmer's Market. Wrapping their smoked pork belly around one of their delicious rabbits for dinner tonight! Beef, lamb, goat, pork... Can't find better anywhere else!

Old Creek Ranch is the reason that the California Avenue Farmer's Market in Palo Alto is superior, in my mind, than the other nearby farmer's markets. It may not be as cheap or have as good of a variety of meats as Dittmer's, but as far as Farmer's Market meat vendors go, they are on the cheap and better variety end. It is more expensive than actual storefront shops nearby, but I can justify it to myself because it is 'locally sourced' & 'grass-fed'. (But really, the farmer's market is within walking distance of my home, I'm too lazy to drive elsewhere, and Dittmer's is closed on Sundays) They sell nearly every part of the animal, but only goats, cows/beef, pigs/pork & lamb, with rabbit saddles as well. So that means bones, organs and meats. I have arrived at 9:30 before, which is half an hour after the market opens, and they are already sold out of multiple items. All the meats are frozen and prepackaged, so you can't really ask for a specific weight/price. Just gotta go with what they have. I've tried, ribeye steak, rabbit saddle, goat shoulder and their regular beef jerky. Other stuff that has caught my eye, but haven't gotten around to just yet include the hearts, sweetbreads and goat & lamb sausages. I think the beef jerky should get a special mention because it is quite different than the stuff I find at grocery stores. First of all, grass-fed beef... so... healthier? But also, it is way more dried out than most brands. Makes it even chewier, and their marinade has a little bit of a kick. ____________ Conclusion: One of the best meat vendors I've seen at a Farmer's Market.

Terri and Bob Blanchard, owners of Old Creek Ranch in Cayucos, CA are regular vendors at several farmer's markets and two stores, one in San Luis Obispo and the other in Templeton: We regularly buy and enjoy grass fed beef, lamb, pork, goat, chickens, and eggs and oranges and avocados in season from Old Creek at their stand in the California Avenue Farmer's Market in Palo Alto on Sundays. Both Bob and Terri (and all their helpers) are delightful people to business with, always ready with a smile and advice on what to buy. We have never been disappointed in anything we purchased from them. Our only disappointment, from time to time, is in occasionally arriving too late to get a particular cut of meat on a given weekend. We are convinced that it is worthwhile to eat a bit less meat and pay the price for 'the good stuff' that is better for our health. Try it, you will soon agree with us. John and Nancy Baum Palo Alto
