The Central Sierra is an AWESOME "backyard" for those of us who live in the central San Joaquin Valley. Kudos to the folks who work to make SNF one of the cleanest and healthiest forests in the U.S.!

Surrounded by beautiful mountains and beautiful friends and family is one of the best feelings you can have in life and it is so worth it. If you ever have the opportunity to come here with your loved ones I beg you not to pass up on the chance. It Is vast and wonderful and there are so many beautiful things, animals and places in nature to get lost in here.

Don't volunteer at Sierra National Forest if you need to be paid the stipend on a timely basis. Sierra National Forest offers at stipend of 35.20 in trade for your blood and guts and delays your pay for months! I gladly volunteered to help from Aug. 2018 to Sept. 21st and received one stipend pay so far. It is almost the first of Nov. and have not received the last two pay periods which ended over a month ago. If you need the money don't volunteer. Forest service volunteer supervisors are kissy sweet acting like they don't know you will have to wait forever for your stipend when you volunteer. In fact, they even lie to your face about it as though they don't know you will have to beg practically for the money they agree to give you. The inept help can't even keep track of your time sheet when its right on their own desk. I have had to repeatedly contact them again and again asking for the agreed upon stipend they offer for backbreaking work. I took the volunteer job as part of my bucket list while in remission from stage 4 cancer because I love the Sierra Nevada. They gave me a cabin at USFS which had a great view but was so full of mouse droppings (stool) on everything, in every drawer, I could not unpack my food for days until I washed and sterilized every piece of cutlery, pots, pans, drawers, floors etc. People have died of Hanta Virus & my cabin, the office, the barns, the sheds were all filthy with rat and mouse crap. You will be better off getting a job with the National Park concessionaires were your pay will at least be minium wage and paid on time. Very disappointed with how the USFS (AKA Forest Squirrels) runs their business.
