Took my Toyota 4Runner cylinder head to be machined at a another shop the initial Inspection was $230 they stated it would cost me $1,100 to machine it on top of the $230 I already owned them. For that price I could purchase a new one for $700 though it would be an after market replacement. Decided to go to Dan's engine shop in Concord on a recommendation and the machined the head for $550. Got me back on the road for less than half the price and got it done in 3 days. Super knowledgeable and friendly. You can't find honest people anymore, but in this shop you can! Thank you!

Had my M54 head resurfaced w/ a valve job. Honest and fast has been running great after install! I had a timing issue when I installed it and wondered if I bent a valve... I brought it back for a check and they didn't charge me! Hard to find a shop like this these days! Thanks again guys!

Nothing but problems since I got my engine back.Head bolts were installed in the wrong spotsThey bored my cylanders without asking and threw in a "free set" of pistons I didnt ask for.I used a punch to mark 3 locations on my crankshaft to ensure I receieved MY crankshaft back after the motor was assembled, I was unable to find the punch marks, which indicates they used a crank from another engine and put it mineLastly, my camshaft is 180° out of timing.....this is engine building 101, how can you call yourself an engine shop and can't even get the timing correct. This is typical stuff the average guy will overlook and shops like this will use that to their advantage and take shortcuts on YOUR engine because they need to get caught up on work.Check your service manuals, and take pictures and use a punch to mark your stuff, and make sure the work your paying for is correct.

This guy is a piece of work .. I called him starting last year around this time OCT and he tells me that it wouldn't be March 2021 for 283 rebuild as he required me to put my name and number on the list for a call back to drop of the engine . Did that. He quoted me $3800-$5000 on the rebuild . Come MARCH 2021 I called him and wondering about the request we had discussed over the phone. He now says it wouldn't be till JUNE 2021 and now the low quote was $5200 for the rebuild. I didn't say anything then and thought I would wait for his call back in JUNE. Twice he said he would call.. Well JUNE came around and gone , no call backs .. nothing.. It is now end of OCT 2021 and I know it would be just useless to even deal with a business like this. Also for a 283 stock rebuild his first quote of $3800 was already outrageous let alone a second quote of $5200.. I can understand the back log of engines and customers first come first serve basis but when you state that you'll be able to to work at a certain time and ask for some information to call a customer back, then do so. At least inform the customer .. Good engine shop or not. I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones to come across this kind of business but for those that got your engine rebuild , consider yourself fortunate. But for those looking for a machine shop , I wouldn't .. shady operation especially when the estimate changes over an original quote and within a couple of months. Also unreliable in communication towards a potential customer..

My Explorer had 200k miles on it and I did not want to trade my engine for a questionable crate engine from a different country. I opted to have my own engine rebuilt since it's been with me all these years and was still in good shape. This however, was no easy task as I couldn't find a shop that wanted to rebuild a 4.0 V6 12 valve pushrod Ford engine. Some shop owners were brusque, some laughed at me and some were downright rude.Luckily I found Joe's Engine Shop. When I called, Clay was the only shop owner who took the time to talk to me about my request. He's a busy man but was still polite and didn't rush me off the phone. We booked a date for me to drop off the engine and I brought the car by for him to take a look at ahead of time. I was quoted a fair price and given a decent pick-up date. I was in no hurry, but the engine was ready on the pick up date and there were no surprise charges or hidden fees. Clay is a straight shooter and understood why I wanted to keep my own engine rather than swap it out. My Explorer isn't my daily driver and this review is long overdue but so far so good. It's been almost a year and everything seems to be working great.Thank you Clay! You and your guys deserve more than 5 stars!

What can I say about this shop and Clay, the owner? To back up a little I’ve been looking for someone to do the machine work on my 1970 z28 engine. I had talked to several other shops that were both astronomical in price and couldn’t give me a solid timeline for completing the work. One even argued with me as to what work I wanted done!I went to Joe’s engine shop and talked to clay (the owner). He’s friendly, Easy going, has all the proper equipment to build a high quality racing motor, and was perfectly fine with the planned machine work. His price was significantly cheaper than the other guys and said drop it off in two weeks and see you a few weeks later.I had to scramble to get stuff there when he wanted it and he was quick to get some shop guys to help carry everything in. As promised, everything was done exactly to the date he committed to. He even called a few days ahead to let me know that he was on track. Also called me a week earlier to discuss the balancing procedure to ensure we were both on the same page (we were). In the end the work quality was superb! Clean, neat, obvious attention to detail as well as finished on time and at his estimated price. If you want quality machine or engine work, you won’t find anyone better!

I just dropped my motor off for a rebuild. My dealings with Clay have been fantastic. After a few brief conversations, he knew exactly what I wanted out of the motor and what parts he would use to get the desired results and never once tried to upsell. His customer service is top notch! Really looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Needed to rebuild the cylinder head on a classic '50's British sports car. Clay is very knowledgeable on what was needed and they did an excellent job, it came out great. Highly recommended.

Wow, the service here is incredible! Now I know nothing of engines, my husband was working on our boat engine and I was tasked with picking up some parts from Joes engine shop. The guy at the front desk was amazing, he was helpful and extremely flexible with my requests. He answered all questions and even helped weeks later when we called with an issue. I will never go to another shop, keep up the good work guys!! Thanks a ton!

Had a head redone - resurface, 3 angle valve grind, burned valve replacement, etc by Clay. Came out clean and performs exactly as expected. Have rolled some miles on and redlined it more than a few times. Pretty confidently can say that they did a good job!
