We thoroughly enjoyed working with the MAK team on our garage conversion in Davis. Every single team member showed a commitment to quality and transparency, and they were all very respectful and pleasant. We never had to worry about the overall quality of the work because our project manager was on site every day to make sure every aspect of the build was taken care of. We also enjoyed working with the design team and appreciated their guidance. We ended up with an airy and modern looking multi-use room and beautiful bathroom that fits our personal style! The team even helped us problem solve a unique storage solution that made up for the loss of our garage. We plan to use this team again for our upcoming kitchen and second bath remodel.

Our 1990s kitchen and family room needed a major update. The remodel had to be done right because it would define our home for the next 20 years and be the place we’d end up spending half our time when at home. For those reasons, we chose to work with MAK, and we’re 100% happy with that decision. From the initial planning to the last finishing touches, everything was done professionally and to the highest standard. What we especially appreciated is their transparency and responsiveness: everything from pricing to timeline is explained clearly, all our questions were promptly answered, and all our concerns were addressed quickly and cheerfully. A really important plus of working with MAK is that they clearly know and hire the best people in every area of design and construction, from painting to cabinetry to flooring. Everyone at MAK is a pro, but we especially want to highlight our designer, Anthony Anderson, lead carpenter Robert, production manager Jon, project coordinator Karen, and last but certainly not least, owner Ken Kirsch.

Our experience with Mak Design and Build was not a good one. Our house that was ripped down to the studs by Mak with 500 feet added is a nightmare, We had black mold in the newly constructed bathroom, roof leaks, a collapsed cabinet, kitchen grout that almost immediately separated, the wrong sink installed and that was only the beginning. The owner Ken would blame us for problems with the house, accuse us of having "Other people" work on the house and come up with bizarre explanations for our problems. Two examples of this would be when we were alarmed by the large cracks in the house shortly after it was built he said that the house next door (it is a split lot) was pulling our house down. He also tried to blame the beer bottles we found strewn around the site on beer cans that were in the crawl space "Someone must have hidden there in the past" The only problem was that they were bottles that would have broken if they fell. Speaking of the attic crawl space when we inquired about better insulation Ken assured us we didn't need it. When we subsequently tried to reinsulate our house I was told that it was not possible due to how Mak plumbed the space. I could go on and on but the bottom line is we never received follow-up on these and so many other items after paying MAK hundreds of thousands of dollars. They didn't even grade the property. They left us with an ongoing nightmare.

MAK is great to work with. My house is old and I requested they keep to that appearance when creating the addition. Truly you can’t tell where the 1928 part ends and the new begins. From wainscoting to 6 over 1 windows they know their stuff. I was assigned Tyler as my project manager. He has an unbelievable work ethic and his energy and creativity matched my own. All the folks that work there are trust worthy and they vouch for their subcontractors which is nice when you are leaving the house.I would highly recommend this group!

P.S. - Ken at MAK accused me of lying in my original review from 2018. I asked for any example of a lie and the only one he could come up with was that I had NOT worked with another design & build company. (How would he know if I had or hadn't? I actually had.) Also, MAK recently refused to take responsibility for another error on their part. During the design process and again during the build process, I'd asked MAK to address the issue of potential rodent infestation in the attic, since I'd had rats infesting my house since I bought it, 22 years earlier. But MAK kept assuring me that I didn't need to worry about that because their structure would be so secure, rodents wouldn't be able to get into the new attic. Well, rodents HAVE gotten into the new attic and there is no way to get them out! I told MAK about rodent infestations last year in the new attic yet they refused to help me - they just told me to call pest control companies. I did so, yet they couldn't help me because MAK did not construct an access point into the new attic. Recently I showed MAK evidence of a rat hole, chewed in the wood paneling of the overhang adjacent to the new attic (see photo), but MAK still took no responsibility & refused to help me. I asked them to build an access spot for my cat to get into the attic, since my cat has been able to keep rodents away in the rest of my house - but MAK refused. I also asked for help repairing the rat hole - but they refused to help me with that either, so I had to do it myself (see photo).
