I sent my boyfriend here to learn how to fight; he came out of it a man. Haha. On the real tho- the gym has such a family feel to it & i think it's really what you make out of it. Out of all the gyms my bf has been to, this is the one he finds incomparable when it comes to technique & instruction. He'll do anything to make time to show up for class on the daily and i also enjoy coming by to watch the team train. They also have a team pup named SARU!! (cutest little doberman) that is there everyday. My bf recommends Michael (coach) to anyone wanting to get into jiujitsu (even me lol). If you're a ucd student looking to learn either bjj or muay thai stop by!

My son and I spent a year here and had a great experience. We mostly did the morning classes and the people were very welcoming and patient with us as beginners. Don't be afraid to give this a try!

The people, the place, and the sensei: all are the best... They helped me way more than just with only Jiu Jitsu. You will train with them not just because you want to learn this amazing technique, but because of them, and that is the best motivation to train.

I have been training under Professor Michael Quigley for 7 months and could not be more thrilled with my experience. Every week I can train as much as I like and always have unrestricted access to ranked belts, including at least 2 black belts. This is a family and every member of that family treats each other with warmness, kindness and respect. Michael provides personal, one-on-one level attention to each member during classes and we focus on the subtleties and micro adjustments needed for success on the mats. I’ve lost weight, put on muscle, gained confidence and skill, and joined a new family I know will be there for my entire BJJ journey. Come train with me!

Very supportive and inclusive community. The owner, Michael, is very knowledgeable and places a strong emphasis on teamwork, safety, and raising all members of the gym up together. From the first day I have felt welcomed and I would recommend to anyone willing to invest the time to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thui.

This is the worst place to train in whole California. Avoid as much as possible. The coach michael is very arrogant, narcissistic and rude whenever a question is asked in the most humble way, he just wants to flaunt his 17 years of training to boost his big ego. He is not around most of the times and goes for weeks somewhere else. I enrolled for three months after which on the 20th day i got badly injured due to his negligence in warming up everyone, on that day we learnt chokes, there were no warmup drills and then we were asked to roll and i slipped my disc completely. I told him after the class that i need rest and dont want to train but he told me to go to a chiropractor who is connected with him. But i avoided it because that would make my injury even bad as my doctor told me to rest but he kept stressing the chiro. I asked him refund for the 2 complete months left but he completely refused everything. Me being an international student had literally no option but to leave my money and have a broken back. Anyone who wants to train bjj please find another place, as this place is neither the value for money and you might get hurt bad like me because of his negligence in proper drill schedule and warmups, plus noone is watching you roll as he his himself rolling. Noone is there to correct you and you will definitely get injured here because of mere negligence and no one correcting you. Also, i really respected him as a coach but that man doesn't deserve an ounce of respect i gave him as it just boosts his ego and arrogance. If you still want to train here make sure you are warmed up even if he is not making you warm up, take time to warm up by urself if he is not making you do it, then start your rolling sessions and dont trust anyone in a foreign land. My experience is extremely worst from this place and i would recommend noone to train here. There are much better places in davis and even in California.

TLDR: ***Michael (one of the coaches) didn't believe me when I told him I BROKE MY FINGER while rolling/sparring under his instruction as a beginner. This was followed by him making fun of me and instructing me to roll another round despite telling him of my injury. READ THE FULL POST FOR THE KICKER. ***I'm sure he is a decent human being but as a coach, IMO, he can be condescending, a bit of a j*** with a "tough guy" complex. I felt that he was not a caring or attentive coach. So... I had a SCARRING experience when I trained here. It was a while back, but I'm sure Michael remembers the incident.HERE IS THE KICKER (you'll get it in a second). I was rolling with another student maybe 2-3 months in, was trying to gain control of his leg and my left ring finger was caught under the pant opening. The other student kicked his leg backwards trying to break my grip and an audible SNAP, broke my finger in two. He was aware that I was a premedical student trying to become a doctor. Not only that he didn't instruct a beginner like me what not to do to prevent injuries, when I came up to him telling him I may have broken my finger HE SERIOUSLY pointed at his previously injured fingers and said, (paraphrasing) "You want to know what broken fingers look like? It looks like this" while showing me his hand then told me to NOT TO BE A BABY AND INSTRUCTED ME TO ROLL/SPAR AGAIN. I got an X-ray the next day because the pain which shown a COMPLETE SPIRAL FRACTURE. Had to get 3 PINS put in my finger the same week. The result: months of recovery, months of rehab, and thousands of dollars worth of surgical fees. Look, I'm sure he's a decent guy but I found that Michael was sometimes condescending and a bit of a j*** with a "tough guy" complex as a coach. I passed it off as him being a "tough love" kind of instructor so I mistakenly ignored it. Also didn't feel like he was a caring or attentive coach. I have since gone to other BJJ coaches and had a vastly different experience. For that reason, I do not recommend this place. My opinion of Michael as a coach is just that, an opinion, BUT the incident that happened at this dojo under his instruction is real so attend at your own risk.

I was interested in BJJ for my children and I emailed Michael at Nova Geracao to inquire. He replied within a few minutes and offered me and my kids the opportunity to come observe a class. Not only did he spend significant time educating us but he invited the kids to participate and was most welcoming. He was also great with the other kids in the class. You could tell they loved him. So long as the kids are on board, this is for sure our new BJJ gym. Can't wait to start!

I have 17 years of experience practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Nova Geracao Davis is where I have chosen to continue my training. I came up the belt ranks and received my black belt in a different BJJ lineage. I have also trained at a few different academies over the years. Nova Geracao stands out for being inclusive of students from all walks of life. It is LGBTQ friendly, and welcoming to students of differing athletic ability. Michael (Davis Owner / Head Instructor) is aware that each student will develop their own game based on body type, level of athleticism and personal preference. There is a collaborative atmosphere between students and very little ego on display. The quality of BJJ instruction is world class, with technique refinements and details that I have never seen anywhere. Classes often feel more like seminars rather than an explanation of one or two moves. I can't recommend this academy highly enough.

I started BJJ at Nova Geraçao under Michael Quigley right before the Pandemic hit in 2020. My husband has been training here for about 3 years and this gym has quickly become a place we call family. The community and support here are what keeps us coming back every day. I came from a CrossFit and soccer background and BJJ has provided a new challenge for me mentally and physically as an athlete. I would highly recommend giving Nova Geraçao a try if you are looking for a martial arts gym and a great workout!
