We had a horrible experience at Banfield Downey,CA. We had an appointment at 10am and the nurse said that my dog would be ready at 1pm. 1 pm came and we heard nothing from Banfield so we called for an update. The front desk told us that the doctor is on lunch and will not be able to see my dog until 2pm. I had a scheduled appointment and yet my dog who has extreme anxiety sat in a kennel for over 3 hours without being seen. We will never return to this location again.

Banfield is great but I believe they treat my cat good I just wish sometimes I could go inside with the doctor in the clinic room where the patients go and sometimes I wish the prices are lower and the covers everything including x-rays and and stuff like that just to know how my cats doing but I can’t afford those pills because it’s so expensive that the only issue happened with that but everything else is OK. I just hope they’re treating my cat nice cause I’m not there to see. And I wish we could be in the same room with the doctor in one of those rooms you guys have at Benfield while you’re waiting for your doctor to come see you and your cat or dog just saying thank you very much. Sorry for the long message. have a great day. ?

Don’t bring your pet here. The first visit is always nice. They’ll get you on a plan and then put your pet off. They won’t even care after the first appointment. Brought my baby here and they said everything was fine, a week later I go to a vet that truly cares Grace Animal Hospital and all of a sudden I find out my boy cat is near death, may need a blood transfusion, has a high fever, and his symptoms should have been clear to any loving vet. Save your money guys. I speak from experience with them. Never again.

I was able to make an appointment for the next day. I really liked this location. I've been to the Lakewood location, but this one is much better. The vet and staff were very nice and listened to my concerns. My terrible Tyrion was a bit difficult, but the vet and I were able to get his exam done. She prescribed him medication, and hopefully, he gets better soon.

Visited Downey location for a new pet visit. I was late 15 minutes due to traffic and they accompanied me. Very helpful and the vet seemed very knowledgeable. The receptionist was very helpful and spent time going over costs and estimates. Good experience here. I'd return. Free first pet visit coupon online.

They are diligent in their preventive care. The staff are always friendly, but not necessarily efficient or organized. This review is solely about the correspondence I have with this facility.I moved recently. My cat gets extremely anxious whenever we have to get in the car, so I had no choice but to choose the Downey location as it was the closest. Whenever I call in, I always seem to get a staff member who is confused:One time, they told me I called the wrong location because my cat was under the Lakewood facility, which is a completely different area that I have never visited. At least twice, when asked who the doctor on my case was, I replied Dr. Barrera, but was corrected by the staff that I probably meant Dr. Banuelos. Both had seen my cat before according to Banfield records, so I didn't care which doctor responded. Most recently, my cat was experiencing side effects from the medication prescribed by Banfield. I called and left a message for Dr. Barrera, who was the last doctor we saw. This time, I was told that there was no Dr. Barrera and, again, that it should be Dr. Banuelos. Ok, fine. Whoever can give me some answers. No one ever returned my call, so I called in again a week later. Just so I wouldn't be corrected again I said Dr. Banuelos, but she claimed she had never seen my cat before, which was untrue because her name was on my cat's records. Then, when I said Dr. Barrera, I was told she had transferred out of the Downey location, but no one had informed me when I called last time. Essentially, if I didn't call again, no one would have returned my message. On top of that, they gave me two options to proceed:Either I bring my cat in again so Dr. Banuelos can consult since she was unfamiliar with my cat's case or we go to the Lakewood location where Dr. Barrera transferred to. Both options seemed unnecessarily inconvenient to me. I wonder if these people understand the amount of stress some pets experience when they have to be transported. Didn't they have enough records for a proper hand off? Why did my cat have to come in again for a consultation? And if Lakewood were convenient for me, wouldn't I have gone already?

My experience with this Banfield was excellent. The vet, Dr. Shen & the assistant, Angie, were of divine help to me & my dog. My buddy is 16 years old and has a heart murmur. He's had it for a couple of years now, but recently he started coughing more often. I took him to another Banfield location and the vet there said his murmur had gone up a level and the cough was probably due to his heart condition. Then she said I should go to a cardiologist. It's not that it's bad advice, it's just insufficient. I then asked her if we could do an X-ray because it's part of his wellness plan. She said she would try but only if my dog behaved because she didn't want to stress him, and the best thing to do really, was to take him to a cardiologist. I have had 3 other dogs in the past that have suffered from this condition so I am familiarized with the process. I know the best route is to go to a cardiologist. But I also know there are other possibilities that my general vet can help with before I am forced to face a $1500 visit to the cardiologist. My dog behaved very well and we did the x-rays. The results were exactly what we expected. And the recommendation was - go to the cardiologist. Instead, I decided to get a second opinion from another Banfield vet. And I am SO GLAD I did. I went to the Banfield Downey location and I am relieved to say that I found my new general vet! Dr. Shen could not have been more thorough with his explanations of the problem + his options for treatment. With the exact same exams, he offered me 4 different routes of treatment and only one of them included a visit to the cardiologist. I was literally crying in the office I feel safe again. Thanks to Dr. Chen. Yes, a specialist is a good option, but the vet should be able to do more than say "go somewhere else". On top go it, Angie, front desk & nurse, was the absolute BEST. She was calm, receptive, genuine, kind and she explained everything in great detail. Always with a smile in her face. I felt welcomed. I felt like she was happy to help me. It was such great experience. I highly highly highly recommend the Banfield Vet Hospital of Downey.

Folks that work here are great. The only issues was they did not give me preoperative instructions for my pet. This caused me to have to pay extra if they had gave me instructions this would not have happened

You make an appointment with them. They won’t proceed with it until 30mins to 1 hour later. What’s the point of making it? After dropping off my doggy they keep him there for hours. They take such a long take along time doing whatever they have to do. I’ve gone to other locations and they do not nearly take as long. By the time he is done my baby is shivering from being in a cage all day long. I don’t understand why we can go and be by their side to do whatever is needed to them. They will not give you updates until you call them! Why do they over book and take hours and hours. They are very inconsiderate of your own personal time. I do recommend checking out another facility to see if you receive the same experience at another Banfield. I’m sure all the other reviews are the same.

It’s a good place overall, the only issue I found is one of the receptionists there is extremely rude and inflexible, I got to a booster appointment 5mins late during the time theI-10 was closed, and there was a crash exiting towards Lakewood, as far as I know there’s a 15min delay limit before they recommend calling in case you might be late, had pets my entire life and vet visits is my norm. Well the receptionist said I was too late to be checked in, and I told her I should still be able to see the vet since it was only a 5 min delay and the appointment is only for boosters which usually takes 20mins to do. She did not want to check me in and didn’t want to even ask the vet, then she said since these boosters need to be applied in a specific time frame I would need to do the entire set all over again, but as a medical student I know that’s not how boosters work, in most cases where the dates are very specific they give you a 3 day window to still be able to apply the boosters. I told her this because I was not about to re do the entire set over a 5 mins delay. She then said “oh yeah I can see if we have availability tomorrow but you should really try to be here on time”, the entire experience was obnoxious and ridiculous, specially the attitude she took from the very beginning. I go the next day, this time 5 mins early and ask to be checked in and she says she can’t check me in until the exact time and to wait seated, and at this point I’m like ok this ridiculous I’ve been checked in 10-15mins before my appointments before and had no issue waiting, checking in is just so that the staff is aware of your presence for when they’re ready to help you out, I don’t know what her issue was but she was extremely unprofessional and rude. The vet on the other hand was amazing, he took my pet with care, was very clear in his comments and was very nice. This place would be a 5 star if it wasn’t for that receptionist.

With the increase in their cases post pandemic, the RVTs DVMs VAs CSCs are still striving for the best care and providing good veterinary preventative care in the Downey Community. Highly recommend to Sign Up on their OWP plans! Definitely saves me money anytime I need the RVT or DVM for exam for my loved pets.
