Initially, I was not going to leave a review because I felt it would not really help fill the hole that I have right now. But after reading some of the very personal, negative experiences some have had with MMK over the last 5-6 years I think I owe it to any other family considering getting a puppy from this breeder. I completely agree that Pete and whoever is helping him are not willing to accept that they come across as uncaring when it comes to their pups and the families who are taking them home. We got our chocolate lab in 2017 from MMK. He quickly began showing signs of food and environmental allergies. He had a great temperament and was a wonderful family dog. Unfortunately, at the age of 6 he had to be put down because of end stage liver disease that progressed so quickly that even the routine liver tests he was undergoing because of his allergy meds did not pick it up until a few days before he passed. The vet felt that the cause was likely an uncommon genetic trait. I wrote to MMK to inform them of what had happened, in case there were others from that litter or those parents who had similar issues. I also expressed my desire to get another puppy from them in the future. As you can see from other posts, MMK often responds that we need to reach out to them and inform them of issues like this, using phrases like “you may have forgotten”. They obviously have the tendency to respond to negative reviews by making it seem like the dog owners are the ones not doing what they should be doing. In my case, I wrote them a heartfelt email thanking them for a great dog and letting them know of his condition (like they have asked many people to do in these reviews). It was a heartbreaking experience for my entire family as we went from a happy, energetic dog to not having him all in 4 days time. It has been 6 months and I have not received a reply from MMK, despite expressing my interest in finding another puppy through them. After this experience and reading some other reviews, I doubt that I will get another puppy from MMK. I recognize that not every dog will be perfect, but I do expect that whoever I get a dog from would seem to care more about the experience they are providing to families.
RIP Jack

We obtained our Black Lab, Shadow, from MMK in the fall of 2022 after we had left him in their good hands for a month of puppy training, which was very smart of us. He is now almost 2 years old, about 60 lbs and is top notch. We have had a number of labs, both for bird hunting and as house dogs, and we don't think we've ever had a lab of his age who is as easy to have around. Shadow is super mellow ("chill" as our grand-daughter says), is eager to please and a treat to train and be around. He is as loving and dedicated to us as we are to him. He is perfect so far as we are concerned. We recommend MMK to anyone we meet who is looking for a lab. Of course we think everyone should have one in their lives.

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW FOR THE HORRIFYING RAW TRUTH ABOUT THIS BREEDER.Short version: RUN!!!! DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS AGGRESSIVE AND INCREDIBLY RUDE, DISORGANIZED, DISHONEST PERSON.Long version: We purchased our lab who was 4 months old at the time (and the Super Citizen 6 week training program) .I explained to Pete that we would not be able to drive to get our dog, and would like to fly him cargo (a two hour flight). He agreed. He avoided giving me the flight info until AFTER he dropped our dog off at 7am in a zip-tied crate. Without us knowing or approving, our dog was booked on a flight with TWO STOPS. I wasn’t able to get him out of his crate until after 8pm. When I shared that I was unhappy he would put our dog through such a traumatic day with no access to a bathroom/proper care for such an extended period of time, his response was “puppies have short term memory, he’ll forget about it!”. Sounds like a breeder who cares about his dogs, right? Our dog was 6 months old by the time he got to us, after weeks of calling Pete or anyone who would answer my call to find out where our dog was, what trainer he was with, and how he was doing in training. Im not sure what we paid for, because he was NOT potty trained, wouldn’t stay or come when called, not crate trained, not walkable on a leash. The only thing he could do was sit (sometimes).Every time I interacted with Pete via phone, he was incredible disrespectful and aggressive towards me, to the point that I was sometimes at a loss for words. I couldn’t believe he would speak to his customers in the way he did. If I hadn’t shown my daughters a picture of the dog already, I would have canceled my purchase and stayed as far away from him and his company as possible. In addition to his lack of training, he was positive for worms, Giardia, and an eye infection (still ongoing) upon coming to us . Yet, he was cleared by a vet just a few days before he was flown to me- something doesnt add up. The amount of money we have spent on our dog’s medical bills in the short time we’ve had him is absolute insanity.I know there are many others (I actually know one of them personally) who have had a similar experience with Pete and MMK who are afraid to post a negative review due to Pete’s clear aggression and anger issues. Please take it from me- this is not someone who deserves your business.

If you are looking for a top quality breeder, Marble Mountain Kennels is your place! The owner and his assistants are so professional, and they are experts at breeding and training. Pete and his team are extremely responsive to questions, and help to match the owner to a pup, depending upon the temperament and qualities you want. We have friends with yellow and Red Fox labs from them, and they were the best dogs. When it was time for us to get a puppy, researched breeders all over the west coast thoroughly and found that Marble Mountain Kennels is the best. We decided to get our pup from them, too. We’ve had an amazing experience. The pups are healthy, Pete actually takes the time to train new owners on how to keep their puppies healthy, what foods and schedules to keep them on, and will even demo how to train the pups when you pick them up. He goes over every detail a new dog owner might have. They carefully breed their dogs, and profile their litter’s personalities so that you can learn about the temperaments of the pups and other qualities, and make a good pick to match your needs. I’m so impressed with them. I’d recommend them to anyone who’d like a healthy, well balanced, well tempered lab…black, brown, yellow or red Fox. Also, their obedience training program is amazing too.

I honestly believe Peet is breeding his dogs very irresponsibly. Our dog is 3 years of age, she and most of her litter mates have had very serious recessive ailments since about 1 year old. My family and the others from the litter have contacted Peet to inform him of our problems, we got no response and have had our previous reviews removed from his page.
I later found out that he is breeding the same two dogs together. Knowing the problems that we’ve had, I cannot comprehend why he would do such a thing. I love our dog and we have spent thousands on keeping her healthy but I will not be getting another dog from MMK.

Let me start by saying the puppy is adorable, but the customer service with whome I presume is the company owner, Pete, has been absolutely abysmal. We paid $2900 for a fox red female, plus we paid an additional $1400 for the citizen plus training progam. Needless to say we went all in on this dog. Day one we recieve her, she has live worms in her stool and is refusing to drink water or eat. We attempt to contact Pete, who ignors our message so we opt to take her to the vet to recieve medication. Per the contract all emergency fees would be covered by the company. Pete stated that our dog "may have not received the proper medication while in their care and someone might have check marked the box". He furthermore stated he would not cover the vet cost as he deemed it not an emergency. Pete does not care about the quality of puppy you recieve, and only that the check clears.

Approximately a year ago I drove from Santa Maria Ca to Yreka to get my beautiful Lexi. She’s smart, gentle, and very obedient young lady. I highly recommend the good citizen program. This gives you an excellent starting point for both you and your dog. These folks are good people and conscientious breeders of beautiful Labrador retrievers. Lexi is more than a dog, she’s now family!SincerelyMike Carter

My MMK puppy "Hawk" just turned 6 mo. and is without a doubt the best dog on the planet, EVER. He's extremely human & dog social, is confident without being dominant, alert but not overly reactive, very playful but calms easily and is about the most biddable little guy I've met. I train about 100 puppies every year so I know puppies! Oh, Hawk did the usual puppy stuff but he was unbelievably easy to correct! I just had to drop my husband's tasty shoe a couple of times and tell him "no" when he started to pick it up, and done! Now if I could just teach my husband to put his shoes in the closet...

We recently purchased one of Marble Mountain Kennels beautiful Labradors. They were lovely to deal with! And so professional and caring with their dams and puppies. The kennel area was always spotless, and the dogs/pups have plenty of daily outside play on the large well-kept rural property! Our pup was whistle trained at just 8 weeks (free!) and even received extra special housebreaking training in the loving family home of a trainer for a modest additional fee. We like to joke that she came fully preloaded with the good-dog software!Rest assured this kennel is top of the lineand the family breeders are fully transparent about their dogs excellent blood lines. The purchase process was smooth from picking our pup to purchasing her. The owners were so kind and accommodating when we were displaced from the recent Mill Fire. They are truly lovely people who care deeply about their dogs and reputation as a top breeder.Highly recommend! Wonderful kennels, wonderful owners/trainers, wonderful Labrador retrievers!

We decided that we wanted a Labrador. We were looking for a red female but were more focused on temperament and health than color. We knew we wanted a female American Lab. After a lot of research we decided on a litter from Marble Mountain Kennels. There was a litter of dark yellow labs that were from parents that fit what we were looking for (a little on the smaller side of the breed standard). We filled out the puppy questionnaire and got on the list with 3rd pick. I am not a hunter and was looking for a dog that would fit in our families active lifestyle. Pete performed his "personality profile" on each of the puppies and next thing we know, it’s our turn to pick. Based on the profile results we chose the female with a red collar. She is the perfect fit for our family. She loves the water but is not obsessed. She plays fetch but is ok not playing too. She loves us. You can tell by her actions that she loves us. She is secure but not dominant. She is the most easily trained dog I've ever owned. She is the kind of dog that you want to be around.I struggle to find the words to explain how happy we are with the dog that we got from Marble Mountain Kennels! If you are looking for a wonderful companion that works to make you happy, look no further. I can say, we found the perfect dog at Marble Mountain Kennels!

My family purchased a puppy from MMK in May 2022 and have been so happy! Our chocolate female puppy is just the best, she picks up everything we’ve taught her and has been so easy to train! She’s so smart and great with our kids. She is great to snuggle with on a rainy afternoon but is ready to go on a hike, swim, or to play fetch for an hour! We have started some hunting training and she’s doing great with that as well! She is our first family puppy and we will definitely go back to MMK when we’re ready!
