My wife and I recently took the steam train ride from Roaring Camp in Felton down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and it was an unforgettable experience. The old-fashioned steam train adds a unique charm, and the ride through the beautiful redwoods down to the coast was absolutely stunning. The staff at Roaring Camp were all incredibly friendly and helpful, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We were dropped off at the boardwalk at 11am and had plenty of time to explore before the train picked us up at 4pm. If you're looking for a memorable and scenic adventure, I highly recommend the train ride at Roaring Camp!

We did the Thomas the train ride. Honestly it sucked. It was supposed to be the Halloween train ride and yet nothing was Halloween about it. The train ride was short and boring and you don’t see really anything. We spent $125 on 4 tickets and drove 2 hours to do this and it was horrible. Not to mention they really don’t have any other activities for kids. Yeah total waste of money.

Went to Pug-o-Ween here and it was hilarious. Extremely hot day, so we were suffering on the main grounds, but the train ride was fantastic, cool and shady and breezy, and the conductor gave an excellent, informative and interesting talk during our ride, Learned all about the redwoods and the history of the area and the train. I thought I already knew it, since I live here and love redwoods, but I learned new things. Riding the train with hundreds of pugs was hysterical!

What a cool experience for everyone. Of course the highlight is the train ride. I did the one through the redwoods. You can also take one to Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
The trip was about an hour. The conductor was funny and informative. Great views of the redwoods and the valley.
Food/shopping/restrooms are all available on site. Ample parking. Get your tickets online.

There are some cool things to do when you visit the redwoods. With 2 trains to choose from, we tried the slower train by mistake, hence the 3 stars. It goes up a steep hill at what seems like 5 mph, and not much to see. If I knew better, I would have chosen the Santa Cruz train for a few dollars more. It's bigger, faster, and has more to see. Plus, you get to choose a 1hr or 5hr layover at the boardwalk. The camp itself has nice restrooms, a few fun things to see and interact with, a small store and gift shop, and a snack bar that is probably open on the weekends. I would also like to add that they didn't say all aboard before we departed.

Although I have been many times to ride the trains with my kids, and loved it every time, I would like to thank Roaring Camp for their music festivals. I have been to many over the years, last weekend´s festival with String Cheese was amazing. It´s a really beautiful spot to hang in your beach chair and dance all day. Easy bathrooms, water, beer, food, booths, redwoods, and always colorful local crowd…what fun…thank you

I had booked online tickets, but when I got there, I was told the train broke down and would probably not run, so the ride was canceled. I got a refund, but 1 hour later, I saw the train leaving, and it was working just fine. Very disappointing.

We had reserved our tickets online for the little train. When we arrived, after an hour and a half of driving, a hostess told us that the train had broken down and that it would not leave. Later in the afternoon, we we saw them pass through the forest.
We should be notified earlier in the event of a cancellation, so that the lady at reception is more aware of the situation and that she offers another departure in the event of a technical problem.
In conclusion, lousy organization.
To avoid.

It's been over a decade since I've been to Roaring Camp and it didn't disappoint. I've now brought my children back (I grew up in Santa Cruz) and it feels like nothing has changed.
The train was fantastic. If you're coming up for a visit I strongly encourage a train ride. We did the shorter one up into the redwoods and it was amazing with great info along the way. Highly recommend.
There are also fun activities for the kids. Food available for purchase and a short walk over into Henry Cowell Redwood State Park.
If visiting, try for a weekday like we did. A lot of people but manageable. The train gets a little behind as the day goes on, so if you have little ones like we do, take the first train of the day.

This is certainly a cool place to explore - not only are the trains neat but the people are friendly, the town has a neat old-fashioned feel, etc.
The cost is astronomical. Compared to other train rides in the Bay Area, their price is extremely high! Personally I just don't think it should cost $150 for a family to take a train ride. I fully understand the trains are antiques, they have staff, etc. But that price is very steep!
Also, it feels scammy to create three levels of annual passes, but then create a ton of events every single week that invalidates the use of two of the three tiers. Our family was gifted bronze annual passes for last year, a generous Christmas gift from the grandparents that should have kept going all year long. However, it proved almost impossible to use our passes because nearly EVERY week/weekend they planned an event. Unless you have a gold pass, you can't use your pass during events. Now something like Christmas light trains I can understand, but there is ALWAYS an event that they've created, like a BBQ weekend, bubble bonanza, etc. that means you can't use your pass.
Again, I understand they have maintenance to do and bills to pay, but the business as a whole seems to lean their focus more on profit than family.
